At least we have Gresham House

  1. The land looks so barren and the only trees they seem to be planting are for timber exporting industry. When they say they’re planting more trees it’s probably Sitka and not native.

  2. This gets posted here quite a bit. We had our trees cut down and have done a poor job trying to recover. People value land so much here, they don’t want to turn it over to forestry and often the land for forestry gets used for fast growing evergreens instead of deciduous forests.

Here’s a smattering of posts about it, some showing the same map you posted. There’s more posts if you search longer, these were just the first ones I got in a single search.

  3. Its not all doom and gloom this data is for full forested area. We have trees growing along most of our rural roads. Lots of wild trees growing out of ditches. We have huge amounts of trees growing spread out all over this country. I don’t think other European countries have ditches and small fields surrounded by wild bushes and trees like us. Open up google maps and zoom in on any field in Ireland and your likely to spot some trees. Seeing whats going on in North American right now having forestry spread out can be a good thing. I bet if you did the same in another European country you wouldn’t see nearly as many trees growing wild.

  4. When I visited Sweden a few years ago, the one thing that struck me was the amount of natural forest cover they have. Not to mention their right to roam rules which means you can walk anywhere you want. True freedom

  5. Trees? Fucking trees? Next you’ll be taking ~~food out of the baba’s~~ money out of the farmer’s pocket!

Don’t ye know the majority of land in this country is for the express purposes of making money for a few thousand farmers and everyone else can get fucked?

  6. our country side is honestly ugly and boring. it’s also very bleak, especially in winter. why can’t this country just do more to reforest our country

  7. Is there not a single info graphic that doesn’t show how our governments gave up our resources to greed and self interest?

  8. In 1588, During her rule, Elizabeth I expressly orders the destruction of all woods in Ireland to deprive the Irish insurgents of shelter. The fact that England is to benefit from this isn’t a mere afterthought.

The late 19th century saw many mobile sawmills travelling around Ireland, cutting down the last few remaining forests. This meant that by the end of the 19th century, Ireland’s forest cover had been reduced from 80% 6,000 years ago to about 1%.

  9. We only have 1% of the country devoted to native semi-natural woodland. The other 5 or so % is dead non-native conifer plantations destroying valuable peatlands.
