China warns Europe against official ties with Taiwan ahead of minister’s visit

  1. The world was perfectly fine before there was any contact with China. There’s no reason to maintain ties with the regime in Beijing unless one is an industrialist.

No, the EU must have official ties with Taiwan. Fuck Beijing.

  2. >*In fact, for a minority of unstable individuals, the mutual infatuation stage morphs into something quite different — a one-sided obsession in which one partner increasingly attempts to mold and shape the other into an object with which he or she can play out their fantasy.*

  3. So what? China needs European money more than Europe needs China. Europe has, well, literally rest of the entire world to produce goods for it. China is competing for those same markets.

  4. Man, I’m really getting tired of the Chinese Communist Party telling us what we should and shouldn’t do.

Do they really think their economic moat is so wide that India or Mexico can’t eat them alive if we start switching?

  5. And Europe doesn’t give a damn about what China warns, everyone knows they’re a toothless tiger just like their beloved brothers in arms ruzzia. Every NATO and EU country should recognize Taiwan as an independent nation at UN.

  6. The strange thing is that either the Chinese don’t understand how counterproductive these sort of public declarations are to European audiences, or they understand but they are making them for the benefit of a domestic audience that expects these sorts of public displays from their officials.

Either one of these things is deeply troubling for the future prospects of relations between China and the rest of the world.

There are no shortage of consultants and experts who are happy to explain how to talk to foreign audiences and navigate cultural barriers when communicating. It’s not like the Chinese can’t find experts who can help explain that threats are not helpful when trying to communicate to others.

The alternative is that endless propaganda and nationalist content in Chinese media has radicalized much of the population; the people expect their leadership to treat the rest of the world roughly. An official who isn’t giving a performance where he threatens foreigners is going to appear weak and become a lightning rod for criticism- China isn’t a democracy, but officials who earn widespread criticism are still at risk of being forced to resign. If Chinese diplomacy is about giving a performance that satisfies domestic audiences, the prospects of any genuine diplomacy are rather grim for the foreseeable future.

  7. I remember the time not so long ago when China was in ascendancy. USA had that orange criminal in power and there was a power vacuum, the world was ready for an alternative normative force and China was stepping up. Chinese consumer brands were gaining in acceptance, few of the Chinese international outreach programs were seen as positive, I think the BRI was in full swing then. Growth projections for China were extreme and it was a foregone conclusion that Chinese economy will exceed the size of the US economy any second.

…then emperor Xi started demolishing everything and now we have China that the weak fear, the strong see as adversary, and everyone laughs at. The Chinese economy is in tatters, international reputation is gone, the myth of “Chinese powerhouse” is dispelled, unemployment is high, growth projections are bad to negative (2050+) and the demographic catastrophe is unavoidable (this one is not Xi’s fault). It is amazing what a single person can achieve in such a short time.

    Ah well.

  8. Kinda glad I dont live in the EU anymore. There are still so many spineless politicans that fear China. China MUST have our market without choice. We are the buyers, buyers have the upper hand.

Instead of EU becoming a major superpower, we fear one while the rest of Europe is running toward the other.

  9. The West needs to end this ridiculous “One China” policy and formally recognize Taiwan as an independent republic.

  10. And we warned them not to help Russia in any ways. Guess we will listen just as good as them. So not much officially, but very much behind the scenes through our companies!

  11. China should learn to mind its own business. All it (and Russia) knows it to interfere with the affairs and sovereignty of other countries.

  12. China should tell themselves to be less of pussy sometimes. All this whining and crying about what others can do is just lame. Xi should be renamed to Xi the Whiner.
