Forklift driver who used 3D printer to make assault rifles jailed for five years

  1. Not to be that guy, but the quote that they were as effective as any other gun…

Really a non pressure rated rifle barrel is a good as any gun? Sure if you want to go back to the old accuracy of the musket.

Also you can go to the hardware store and make a working gun, see p.a. luty for a idea.

The real hard part is getting proper ammunition, if you can get ammo it’s just as easy to get a firearm from the same supplier…

You could in theory make your own gun cotton, but without 100% nitric acid you would struggle to get the reliability of manufactured bullets.

  2. That’s a scary prospect, as fucked as things are in the UK, one thing this country does get right is keeping guns off the street. This is a game changer in that regard.

  3. Expect to see more and more of this, and for every one the NCA knows about there will be many that they don’t. haig1915 is correct that the real limiting factor will be access to ammo (and the capacity to test/sight/practice), but people will find ways around those too. I’ve seen these operated and they are definitely more effective than muskets.

  4. Seeing these being used to great effect by the insurgency in Myanmar. Crazy to think of what might happen if they get easier to make and operate in the UK in future.

  5. “Fired one round once, without exploding” isn’t *quite* the same as “as effective as any other gun that you might fire on a firing range or elsewhere,”.

But I get what they’re driving at… It might be short-lived and useless at hitting your target, but it’s still capable of killing.

  6. You can make a shotgun with 2 lengths of piping and a nail, but guns don’t kill people, it’s the ammo. (And sometimes rappers…)

  7. I’d love to see the results of people who try to use these printed assault rifles in any situation that requires firing them more than once or twice…

I expect the results could likely best be summed up by the word debris…

  8. I’m enjoying the accessibility of firearms as a prospect in the future. Just imagine a world where gun laws can’t work because it’s trivially easy to find CAD files and the machines and instructions to manufacture them are highly accessible.

It’s got exactly the same set of strengths as online piracy as a phonomenon and I think it’s fantastic.

I really am looking forward to seeing how the 3D printed weapons community develops and gets more sophisticated.

  9. Why even bother with all that?

They should have just 3D printed a car and run anyone over with that. Judge would have given them a BJ and some vouchers for the inconvenience of dragging them to court.

  10. would’ve started my comment with ”what a weirdo” but i’d probably make a ”real doll” some i’m no less weird.
