  1. OK headline is a bit clickbaity and the bit about only giving it to people it means something to is questionable but he’s 100% right on this bit:

    >“I think it is quite ironic. I think many of the councillors who will vote to give the freedom of the city to Greta Thunberg would never vote for a green measure; would oppose every single green measure including carbon taxes.
    >
    >“So, this is an easy thing to do but it is meaningless and I don’t think many of them will actually back it up with the kind of policies that they are endorsing.”

  2. There’s no point in being mad a things that don’t matter. Also, Newstalk is tabloid radio and should not be taken seriously.

  3. She’s raising awareness about an extremely important issue that no one in power seems to be taking any serious action to prevent. No matter what u think of her personally, it is a net positive.

  4. Are we not getting fined for for failing to cut emissions and meet our climate targets? If she accepts that she’s no better than the clowns giving it to her.

  5. It would be fantastic if she accepted via a Zoom call to prevent the unnecessary travel and to deny the photo op to those who awarded it.

  6. If Shane Coleman has an opinion on anything I genuinely DON’T WANT TO KNOW. He can shove that mic up his arse. What he’s doing is “virtue signalling” to Newstalk’s base and their values

  7. I mean, yes giving someone the freedom of a city because of their work for a cause you support is about as virtue signally as you can get. You are literally doing it to signal that you support something virtuous.

    So what?

  8. Same thing as old, wealthy politicians being given honorary degrees and recognition from universities.

  9. It is shameful to be honest. We will throw a meaningless award at a publicised character, refuse to make any kind of effort to solve the real world problems and then pat ourselves on the back for being so progressive.
