It wasn’t actually the Irish State that committed nearly all of the mothers to those institutions but the families of those women. It’s a fact that’s often forgotten.
It’s interesting there’s never a conversation how parents committed their children to these institutions. Yes the church had power but there’s many examples of families refusing to commit their children.
