  1. I really wish the media would write a little more clearly on topics like this:

    The headline is written such that AI would go all Skynet / Ultron on us and start wiping people out independently.

    That they’re really worried about is AI being used to push advancements in weaponry / applications that could be used *by people* to harm humanity.

    It’s a reasonable fear, written about badly.

  4. The government really doesn’t want to admit the biggest immediate threat is the loss of income, of course that would mean some wokerati policy is needed to address it.

  9. The debate on AI seems to be getting more stupid by the day. Ironically you would have a better informed debate if they just asked ChatGPT rather than some No10 advisor. I think that is probably what they are most worried about.

    No, you can’t get it to tell you the recipe for a bioweapon. You can ask it, but it’s going to give you an answer that _sounds_ good (which is all it has ever been able to do).

    More cynically AI is already deadly, in the form of TikTok recommendation algorithms that drive people to suicide.

  14. I’m completely over the idea of politicians and their advisors weighing in on this. There is a global race here that will not end until such time as one play becomes dominant and has a runaway AGI.

    All this talk of “could” and “might” is irrelevant. As is the “way too late to the party” intent to regulate.

    As ever, our backwards political class are so far behind they’ll never catch up and what will be, will be.

  15. This is so ridiculous. I guess the people with the AI realise they need a barrier to entry to stop myriad others simply recreating what they have and making it worth nothing. There’s no better barrier to entry than Government red tape.

    This is to stop you developing AI, not them.

    The sad thing is Governments are going to fall for this scaremongering crap. It’s not even the usual “5 years” they put on these dumb stories. Now it’s just 2 years.

  17. A lot of early religious beliefs centered around sun worship. Would be crazy if in the past we got enslaved by AI/Robots and a sunflare destoyed them leading to us worshipping it.

  22. I’ve literally just been made the lead researcher for the implementation of AI at my job, half the people are excited about how we can use it as a tool and the other half think we’re all going to be destroyed.
