No action to be taken over Adjoa Andoh’s ‘terribly white’ coronation remark, Ofcom says

  1. Ahh yes, racism is allowed as long as it’s the “right kind” of racism, yet the same people allowing it, will then act shocked when white people end up holding far right views in response.

  2. Compare and contrast with the reaction to David Starkey’s comment:

    > “slavery was not genocide, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many damn blacks in Africa or in Britain”

For which he “had several honorary doctorates and fellowships revoked, book contracts and memberships of learned societies cancelled, and his Medlicott Medal withdrawn.”

  3. What meaningful action is Ofcom able to take against her as an individual for her frankly racist remark? What powers do they have?

For the record, I’m absolutely sure *none* will ever actually be taken.

  4. What did she even mean?

The monarchy of a historically white nation is white

Like, forget the racist undertones of the terrible part. What is she actually saying?

It’s like looking at an orange and saying “terribly orange isn’t it”

  5. Here’s hoping someone on TV says Idris Elba’s family is ‘terribly black’ and have no action taken…

  6. For the people struggling to understand how this was a racist remark, use the racism litmus test: reverse the races in the scenario and see if it sounds alright to you…

Let’s say a white football commentator was talking about a team and said “There is a bit of me that has gone from the rich diversity of the crowd to the terribly black team. I’m very struck by that”.

Does that still sound like just a statement of fact and totally acceptable?

  7. I’m pretty sure that if this lady was white and had described anything as “terribly black”, even her new Yorkshire terrier, she would have been cancelled and arrested before she’d got back to the green room.

  8. I do think no push back on racism towards white people is something that’s decidedly allowed to happen to drive more people to the right.

    Divide and conquer.

  9. Everyone in here saying ‘this how you get more far right’ are literally the reason we end up with so many far right chuds.

  10. I don’t think action should be taken, but it was an incredibly dim-witted thing to say, but then posh twits like Adjoa Andoh usually are dim-wits

  11. Seriously. “Terribly” in that sentence is a very well-known ironic idiom meaning “very”, it doesn’t mean there is anything terrible about it. And the reason they are all white is because they are a bunch of inbred grifters who have somehow managed to con half the country into thinking they are better than the rest of us and should be allowed to do whatever they like.

If she’d just said that, which I suspect is what she meant, we would all be applauding her. She would have been arrested for it, obviously, but you can’t have everything.

  12. Here we go. As others have pointed out, people wonder why the far right is growing at a massive rate. Now excuse me, I’m off to be called a racist homophobe because I disagree with Anne Boleyn being portrayed as a black lesbian
