We need to talk about Leo: There is growing discontent in the Fine Gael ranks about the party’s performance under Leo Varadkar

  1. Maybe the actual problem is the failure to develop policies to address the issues people care about.

I understand Leo is annoying but who do FG have that is less grating?

  2. It’s Helen time, I don’t see the two Simons standing a chance. Although Harris is crazy active online.

  3. It’s like a late stage capitalism where all the people who thought they were safe and in the elite now have children eating gone off aldi beans.

FG answer will be to put a leader in charge who looks less smug about it.

  4. Someone like Heather Humphreys I’d imagine would be an ideal candidate. The main reason is her seat is safe regardless of how the election goes for FG. The Protestant FG seat in Cavan Monaghan will always be a safe bet.

  5. We badly need an election. Fine Gael don’t represent middle class Ireland. When I was younger, farmers, teachers, garda, health care professionals were all Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

I haven’t heard from a single one that they will vote for them now.

Unless you’re part of a vulture fund, why would you vote for either of them.

  6. Maybe they already discussed this ages ago, but the word leaked. If not, then why is FG only discussing this now after a year and a half of plummeting approval?

  7. “Performance” in this case referring to the fact that they perform zero percent of their duties and instead get up on a stage every two weeks perform a song they wrote about sinn fein.

  8. Didn’t he vote against gay marriage in 2010 before he came out! Sounds like an American Republican!?

  9. Absolutely. No commitment to index-linking tax bands, little in the way of major initiatives despite a massive surplus, and I haven’t a clue what FG think they are doing in justice. It’s time for a change, but we don’t want to jump from bland to bland – time for a real leader who doesn’t go around apologising to the shinners for representing the people who vote for them.

  10. Could see this coming a million miles away, but I have to ask yet again – when the *fuck* are the FF backbenchers and grassroots going to start similar rumblings about Martin?!

  11. I know people want to go in and bash FG but he does do things his predecessors didn’t. He is all about rhetoric. He likes to centre his campaign around populist talking point but what is insane is he doesn’t even seem to know what are popular talking points. He is clueless and has no real success to show for himself. Even being in government, he has just taken Enda Kenny success and gradually made the party less and less popular. They need a new leader. Even in opposition, he won’t be able to rebuild the party.

  12. From elections to polls, this is the worst performing FG party ever. And when Leo is asked, he says everyone is telling him hes doing a great job

  13. Leo is seriously unlikable and a smug fucker.

But their drop in the polls is directly related to their fucking abysmal record on housing and health.

People who really hate Leo wouldn’t vote FG anyway.

I suspect this media coverage is just angling for a “fresh start” FG, hopefully people don’t fall for it. They’ll get the same policies with Coveney.

  14. I wonder does it have something to do about his appointment to the Dáil and the housing crisis coinciding? Cause i love that fact!

  15. Varadkar on the surface view only seems like the sort of leader most would dream of. But even a simple glance of his policies (and FG’s policies) are basically fucking over anyone that isn’t a landlord and having a spat at the opposition for really insignificant issues in the grand scheme of things. Simon Coveney in hindsight would have been a better FG leader, but he is also better suited to the international stage of the EU than leading a landlord party.

  16. Yeah he’s a horrible fecker but there’s also a serious lack of imagination or action from the parties in power.

  17. I’ll never understand how one man can piss away the positive force that he had behind him in mid 2020 to become such a smug, condescending figure

  18. Does the Indo get to pick who’s leader of Fine Gael. The Sunday Times has a similar hit piece on Leo, though they also give the thumbs-down to Coventry replacing Leo.

  19. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is all part of the plan. Milk the systems they’ve set up to steal tax payers money until the whole thing is on verge of collapse, act like assholes, get voted out, criticise their replacement for not being able to fix all the problems they’ve made with a wave on a wand.

  20. When the main FG propaganda newspaper in the country has the knives out for Varadkar you know he’s fucked
