Tenants who pay rent to a landlord based outside Ireland will be pushed to supply a range of information on their landlords and their rental income under a new online system being launched by Revenue.
The changes mean tenants will no longer be deemed chargeable for the tax and or be responsible for accounting for the withholding figure of 20pc on their personal tax returns.

What? Couldn’t they get this information from like, the RTB? The actual government agency in charge of this information, no?
The public service love hoisting these systems on taxpayers, as if we have nothing better to be doing than filling in forms and applying to pay levies.
Yep, this is going to go well.
Tenant: “Hey, landlord, what’s your address and tax ID number?”
Landlord: **crickets**
Revenue: “It’s fines and six months in Mountjoy for you, then, non-compliant tenant!”
Alternate ending:
Tenant: “Hey, landlord, what’s your address and tax ID number?”
Landlord: “Hey, my brother and/or cousin needs to move into the property and renovate it and turn it into a betting shop and then sell it, so get out.”
Can’t check with the land registry no?
How is the tenants problem wtf?
Onus should be on the landlord to supply this to Revenue.
Why does a tenant have to supply information for a landlord?
So if I understand this correctly, under the current process, if your landlord is outside the state, the tenant must take 20% off their rent, send that 20% to revenue and the remaining 80% to the landlord?
Under the new system, every time rent is paid, the tenant must log into the revenue portal, declare their landlord is not resident in Ireland and get a bunch of the landlords details to do so. And also do this with 21 days of paying rent?
Edit: this country really does have an unsettling contempt for renters
>The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV) said in a newsletter to its members this month that it had been “lobbying for these changes for years”.
That explains a lot. Nobody with the public interest in mind would propose this.
Why the fuck is this being put on the tenants? Fuck revenue
Landlords not happy with tenants paying their mortgags now the tenants are responsible for paying the landlords taxes too? Wtf is this.
We had a couple of words for these people in our history didn’t we. We didn’t say they lived overseas, they were “ABSENTEE LANDLORDS”. We condemned them for living off the labour of their tenants in Ireland while they lived in Britain. Here we are 100 years after independence and allowing the same shit system to operate.
its stupid. tenant can supply eircode to revenue and say amount paid in rent monthly. tenant get a tax break for renting for doing so, irregardless of accuracy. its up to revenue to follow up with unregistered landlords, they now have a record of amount paid and address of the property. they should know who owns it.
