I found this particularly interesting. Of the 11 nations in the survey you feel even warmer than the Poles about the US and much more so than Sweden. What are everyone’s thoughts on this?

I get down voted ? Rude

  1. Denmark has, since WW2, been a very pro-US country. There’s a long history of Danish-American collaboration during the so-called Cold War, and after the fall of the USSR and actually existing socialism, Denmark has maintained this close collaboration with the US, as with the wars in the Middle East.

As it often is, the relation individuals have to the US, their views of the US, are largely shaped by their other political beliefs. Liberals, conservatives, social democrats, and, in a recent development, the popular socialists, _all_ generally have pro-US politics, and are in many cases, if not uncritical, at least less critical than leftists, and the most right-wing conservatives. The former who are critical of the US due to well … US foreign and domestic politics, and the latter who, generally, are critical of the US in large part due to cultural influence (though to some extend also due to US foreign policy.)

But generally pro-US sentiment is the standard, and you have to move, not necessarily to the fringes, but at least somewhat out of the mainstream, to find the more critical voices.

  2. Depends entirely on the person and when we’re talking about. I think across the board people feel more warmly about the US pre and post Trump than during Trump.

But it’s going to vary wildly from person to person. The economic right are bound to be very fond of the US for the economic policies. Some parties lift US policies almost directly as proposed strategies for Denmark, such as the Moderates and Liberal Alliance.

American culture is also extremely big in Denmark, music, movies, games, everything from jeans to coca cola. Of course such a connection will automatically come with a certain level of endearment towards a country.

However, almost everyone is also acutely aware that the US isn’t all roses and butterflies. Everyone knows that your political system in general sucks, your health care sucks, your education system sucks, and half the country are basically idiots. In that regard you often serve as a warning in debates, about what can happen to us if we don’t protect our education system.

I also think a fair amount of people are aware of the human rights violations against your own people (i.e. how many you imprison) which is pretty much only surpassed by China.
As well as your tendency to stick your nose in other countries’ business for well over a century, through covert operations, the many proxy wars, and direct conflicts.
These two factors are only being ignored because the US is a useful ally in case Russia or China decide to try something.

  3. Danes have such a love/hate relationship with the USA. We LOVE some parts like NYC and iPhones, but don’t have much good to say about what some would call “everyday America”.

  4. Serious posts get downvoted to 0 in this sub. Nothing rude about that, just how it’s moderated, as far as I understand.

Your culture is in general extremely weird to us, but you are friendly as people and politically we cooperate.

  5. Out of all the super powers right now, USA is the one that we share the most values with, but that doesn’t mean we share a lot of values. As a country, I despise USA. Your cultural and political values are completely insane and backwards to me, but again, compared to the alternatives, you’re the better ally. Sadly.
