Anyone else get the fear when the luggage door opens that some goon is going to hobble off with your bags or am I just paranoid?

  1. Wasn’t there two brothers before caught.

The little fella got in the luggage hold and went through all the bags on the journey then jumped out at a stop with all the valuables in his brothers bag.

So OP if you fall asleep on the bus now you can dream of a little gremlin brother scuttling around in your valuables.

True story about 10 or 20 years ago.

  2. Not when at the stop, but I remember a friend was visiting from Australia and we were pretty tired when we got off the bus, so we’d left one of her bags in the understorage area. We rang the station about 20 mins later (about ten mins after last stop), but someone had run off with the bag.

So yeah, ride with your bags up top or have a decent memory.

  3. Happened to me once, but it was a genuine mistake and they put the bag onto the next bus and I collected it when it arrived. But yes, I always used to worry about it when I got the bus.

  4. Lost mine somewhere around mitchelstown about 10 years ago. Life changing moment due to what was in it. All of little or no value to a goon.

  5. Ex BÉ driver checking in and baggage thefts are very common on coaches. Even from people not on the bus. They could be waiting at the bus stop and as soon as the luggage door opens they just grab a few bags and run.

People on the bus too just take extra bags when leaving

I’d never put a bag under, there’s no way of knowing who owns what bag.

The amount of forms I’ve had to put in for them is worrying and of course quite a few of them were for tourists here from around the world with their passports in said bags too, what a nice welcome to Ireland 🙄

  6. What I fear is some arsehole chucking my bag to the other side so far out of reach that I have to climb all the way inside, with every bit of me except my one foot now in the luggage hold and then the bus driver lowers the door down on my leg and starts to drive away with me trapped inside and my foot sticking out the door.

Cuz that actually happened to me once. Thank god there isn’t much force on those doors or my leg would have snapped. And thank God there was someone there waiting for another bus who alerted the driver or I’d have been traveling for a half hour at least stuck like that.

  7. It happened to me coming back from Derry in like 2004, 2005.

For some reason, they stole a bag that had my wigs in it. I had two dreadlock wigs, and they were the only things in the bag, and both were stolen. The bag with my GHD hair straightener was fine though, so I was very confused.

  8. I always find it funny with travelling and baggage.. like the security (not for busses) is relentless and strict (let’s say the airport), but when it comes to retrieving your bag off a bus or airport conveyor belt it’s literally everyone for themselves.

  9. No I always get that , why I put them at the back that it’s not the first one available in case (no pun intended) that happens ha

  10. When i moved to Ireland for a year and got the bus at the airport and the driver told me to put my lugage in the hold… wich is not normal here in NL, i honestly did kinda freak out because it had some expensive stuff in it.

I sure as shit sat on the bus backwards looking at every stop if someone took out my lugage lol

  11. I had a weird one happen to me before on the bus to Ennis. When the bus stopped in Clarecastle, I saw a guy get off and take what looked like my bag. Bag was a small green Jameson suitcase.

So ten minutes later, when I get off in Ennis, I check the luggage hold, and sure enough, my bag is gone, but there is a smaller green Jameson bag there. So knowing it’s not mine, I left it there and went to the ticket office to explain. Half through explaining the situation this young lad busts in with my bag. I prove its my bag to the bus guys and go to leave. Then yer starts to get thick, asking where his bag is. I say it’s still on the bus. Why would I want a bag that’s not mine. Yer man goes iff in an huff to try and catch the bus in Gort, saying I should of grabbed his bag. Like I knew he was going to turn up.

  12. While it didn’t happen on the coach. My mum’s video camera was stolen from her trolley in Dublin Airport. This happened 2001.

  13. I’ve a clamp for my bag whenever I travel by bus. I do a lot of travelling around the country for work, so picked it up to keep a safe mind.

It’s not anything massive, just a simple cord lock to wrap the luggage handles to something. My theory is they don’t have time to rummage through your bag so are pretty much playing chance they’ll get something good when they open it later, and by removing that ability to swipe it away you mitigate their opportunity.

  14. You’re not paranoid. Happened a couple on the aircoach with me who just landed in Dublin. Apparently some lad just walked up while people were getting their bags at O’Connell Street and casually walked off with theirs.

Bizarrely a woman later admitted seeing this happen but only mentioned it when the couple were asking where their bag was.

On the next aircoach I took the driver did not appreciate me asking to keep my bag on the bus with me….

  15. Took a bus from an airport (not in Ireland), they had numbered tags which were placed on luggage, and you held onto the paired token. At each stop, the driver would verify ownership before handing over your items. Seemed efficient enough, bit of a hassle for the driver but gave peace of mind.

  16. Always.

Was quite the life changing experience when I went to Korea and they put a number tag on my suitcase and the other half of that tag to me, so when I got out I had to show it to the driver, otherwise I couldn‘t get my bag.

  17. This legit happened to my cousin from NY when she was passing through Longford. I still feel sorry for the gaurd they sent to talk to her lol.

  18. Happened to me 3 days before Christmas few years ago, I hopped off bus to go to toilet at monaghan, was coming back and some lad was standing with my bag beside him. Went up and told him to was mine, give it back. He said something like sorry I must have grabbed the wrong bag. Been super paranoid since about it lol

  19. I used bring a rope style bicycle lock with me when I was backpacking and always tie my bag to something when I’d to leave it anywhere like under the bus

  20. So, random story — I’m not from Ireland but I lived there for 3 months one summer 15 years ago. I took the bus all over the country — and every stop I’d hear this announcement.

By about the 6th or 7th trip I turn to the passenger to my right and say “Could you help me understand what they’re saying in Irish?” Thinking it odd they didn’t have an English announcement following.

This baffled passenger says “It’s English! Stand clear, doors…”

And that’s the day I realized I still hadn’t mastered understanding the accent…

  21. You’re not paranoid. It happened to friends in Dublin. The thieves used some lad with Down syndrome to do it so if he was spotted it could be passed off as an accident. Bastards

  22. I had my bag taken by accident. I got off the bus and was searching underneath for like 5 mins. The bus driver was literally shrugging his shoulders and being like what can you do. Anyway as we were there a Garda car zooms up beside us and tells us someone had taken the bag in error a town about 30 mins gone. They drove down to our town then and left it in the Garda station. So all was well that ended well but stressful for a 14yo coming home from the Gaeltacht.

  23. Yep, lost my bag with all my college notes when heading home for Christmas, with exams right after the Christmas break. No digital notes at that stage. The panic of trying to copy the notes after New Years still haunts me. Never did get that bag back, but I learned never to put my bags into the hold again, even if it made me piled under luggage for the 3 hour journey.

  24. It’s definitely a good place to use an AirTag, even with nothing except clothes in my bag, I always sit on left side (if possible)and watch, as if that helps 🙄
