>The modular homes will initially be used to temporarily house people fleeing Ukraine but the government believes they have the potential to be utilised to address other accommodation challenges such as social housing and student accommodation.
I genuinely don’t know why the government didn’t do this sooner. I think a lot of individuals would look into building similar houses if it wasn’t for planning constraints.
That’s nice. Hopefully after the year there will be better options on the table (them renting on open market or hopefully the war being over in Ukraine).
Either way having these modular homes built is a plus.
I like the fact that the Ukrainians staying in these will be paying (a non exorbitant) contribution.
How are they going to pay €145k in only 12 months.
They could have done this years ago but refused because this would 1/ be against their ideology and 2/ upset their vested interest friends.
Cant be having any mechanism that would drive down house prices or rent.
FFFG serve neoliberalism and not their constitiuents.
Cheap at the price, to be honest.
They’re good for 40-60 years, and they can be rented out afterwards.
And every new accomodation space of any kind, anywhere, frees up accomodation for others who need it.
Christ I’d love one of them. I’ve €40,000 and I might as well have 2 shillings for all the good it does me getting out of this rented shithole.
Those things are like a 4 star hotel compared to where I am.
Why can’t the government see that is case with 10,000’s of us.

Wouldn’t these be a good short term fix for the housing crisis in general?
I know most will want a ‘real’ house but at this stage then why not
Surely to god there’s no way these cost 145k? Fucking hell. Everything government touch spirals in price.
Here in Donegal people are living in crumbling homes and the government won’t even offer them a hotel to live in if they feel unsafe it be in the home now. Remember hearing an old lady on highland radio crying because she lived alone and cost of heating was too much and couldn’t start a fire because smoke leaked from the chimney into the house. She said she cried in bed cold hoping the house won’t fall while she sleeps
Is it just me or are they CLEARLY insulting every young person and non home owner in this country over and over and over again?
If anyone is curious, the expected lifespan on a modular house in our climate is 60 years. Nothing really temporary about them if you examine other cultures living habits.
The Japanese rebuild their entire fucking house every 30 years.
Our culture itself has a big impact on the housing issue as a lot of people have a predefined idea of what a “house” is because we had a really good run of new type housing for decades in the 1900s (corporation housing etc) which had an even longer impact as subsequent generations then grew up in them.
60 years isn’t temporary. You can plan for refurbishments well in advance. The entire thing doesn’t need to be replaced at once either because, like the name implies, they are modular and can be done in sections.
We should be rolling these out wide scale.

Who’s got the contract for supplying these?
So they’re starting to move them in as early as July, and have built enough to home nearly 3,000 Ukranians in them. Why couldn’t we do this sooner? There’s 12,000 homeless in our country – it feels like if there was no refugee crisis they literally could end the homeless crisis overnight
I was told I wouldn’t be given planning permission for one of these on my own land just because kildare County Council just dosnt like them.
Cool! If it works out hopefully they can roll it out to the wider population too
why can’t they do this for our growing homeless population as well
45 sqm ,2 bedroom would be ideal for so many people but the government just don’t give fuck about getting people out of the rent trap.
They have a life span of 60 years so no issues there.
If I was renting I’d much rather something like this than paying extortionate rents for places that are often pure kips.
Is there any websites that I search for these types of homes ?
I presume they pass all building regs ,would be really interested passing on the info to a mate of mine.Although the CC probably wouldn’t give him planning.
Here is an idea.. Create a state owned company to build these fucking things and create apprenticeships out of it as well. Use it to house refugees and solve the homeless crisis as well as build them to sell to young people and small families. The government could get this rolling in no time if they wanted to.
So sounds like you *can* build houses overnight, after all…
What a fucking joke! Just trying to look like heroes for the EU.
It’s so annoying that the Government’s incompetency is making the average people angry at literal victims of war
Cool. So you now need a Ukrainian passport for the government to actually care about the housing crisis for particularly younger people.
I guess I’ll just have to keep paying €980 for a shit room in a house of 12 people.
I wish i had a chance of getting a home like that..
I see these ‘Ukranians’ driving around in brand-new cars and getting brand-new houses. While Irish people suffer and can barely afford to live it’s beyond a joke. When people complain they call it hate speech. The media doesn’t report the thousands and thousands of people rightly protesting against this and if they do they call them extremists. The government and the media are taking the piss out of us and we’re all too busy with our heads in the sand to even notice it.
We know damm well these people are not genuine Ukrainians and have destroyed their documents on purpose to get into Ireland but yet they get away with it. In Australia, they put people in detention centers while they find out who said person is why the fuck couldn’t we do that. The number of attacks on women and children too since these people have been allowed in is unreal.

I am all for helping genuine people fleeing war-torn areas and people fleeing terrible things I don’t discriminate against anyone I’m not a racist at all but people need to be able to speak up without being labeled such by the woke agenda. These people are all criminals and out of the people I’ve met so far very very few were actually genuine Ukrainians.

This country has gone to shit and is being run by greedy landlords and we have so many homes on air bnb that could be used to house families. Something needs to be done about that too
Im not going to lie. Im extremely jealous, these will be amazing to heat in the winter and I cant even afford to turn the heat on. Fuck.
There’s a German company that makes posh, minimalist versions of this and I have dreamt about building one in the middle of a bog or woodland somewhere. My partner and I wanted to buy a €30,000 plot just outside a town in north Donegal with a beautiful view and standing stones in the field behind, and the listing agent told us to not even bother because we’re not local and would never get planning permission. Two years later and that beautiful spot is still for sale and we’re still paying a small fortune to rent a house packed with shite furniture we hate. I’m very happy that Ukrainians won’t be homeless and think we have an obligation to people fleeing a fucking war, and I’m an immigrant anyway, but bringing in this kind of solution while telling people who can and want to make a life for themselves in Ireland that there’s no way to fix the housing crisis that successive governments created really pisses me off.
Is the government actively trying to piss us off at this stage.
Government won’t give me planning permission on my own land.
Yet they get a next to near free house. They’re here a long time now with free contributions, either contribute and work, pay their own way now or go back.
This is my confirmation that I’m out of this country. It’s an insult to every hard working young person in the country trying to build their own house….because the government don’t give a crap if any of the tax payers end up homeless or have to pay a fortune on a mortgage/rent. I’m done. No new houses in my area for even people to buy even with money.. Yet they get priority for housing? Done. Bye.
