Deciphering birth certificate text – does anyone know what this says? (Should be in Sligo) Tags:ireland 13 comments I’d be grateful for any help on this. I can’t confidently make out a single letter. Do you know if its supposed to be a persons name / place name etc? Looks like a townland Gortnáskea means “Field of the thorns” It looks like there is a Gortnáskea in Tyrone and another in Donegal. Doesn’t look like there are any in Sligo http://www.townlands.ie It looks like Gortnaskea to me but I don’t think there’s any in Sligo. Gortnáskea? Seems like a good example of anglicising the placename is more counterproductive than anything Edit: To clarify, place name. Gortnaskea seems pretty promising. Sometimes registration districts cover two counties, This interactive source may help: [https://www.johngrenham.com/places/plu_index.php#maps/](https://www.johngrenham.com/places/plu_index.php#maps/) This may not be helpful but it could also start with a T. Very similar to cursive T…. Tor/Tort/. Agree that Gort na skee is a good guess tho. Bit odd to see a word with a Fada and a K Govt in an ikea Gortnaskea(gh).
