Myeah, I take a pass on this – I saw how “regular” Yugoslavia ended up.
Tito and Dimitrov (Leader of Communist Bulgaria) had good relations with each other and long wanted to unite the two countries. The plan was only further encouraged through common Slavic identity, language, culture and politics. However, once a meeting to Moscow was called to discuss the manner, the agreement was dropped when Soviet forces wanted to take control of this so called greater state.
Should this agreement have happened, Greece and Italy would’ve been, in some areas, Communist. Also, Albania would have fallen completely under Yugoslav-Bulgarian control, instead of just being ‟pressured” by Yugoslavia throughout the cold war..
Well, at least it’d have been easier to memorize the Balkan for my high school geography test.
I don’t think he had this dream XD
The nations of Yugoslavia fought against Serbian nationalism, we were lucky we weren’t included in this empire masked as a union
Change the name to Greater Bulgaria, move the capital to Sofia, and we are on board. 😂
Civil war speed run
If it had atleast a good start maybe it could work, but we all know that the first bump in the road would turn to nationalism and these countries have significant history between each other at this point. I also have no idea why Albania is in there? I’m pretty sure they aren’t slavs.
Dying was the best thing Tito did
I’ll try to explain….
Fuck Tito!
All in all it seems a fantasy to me, Bulgaria has a very distinct identity, in state tradition especially, so to forget all of that history and become watered down to this common balkan mix seems weird to me. Apparently the real world Yugoslavia states had the same idea, otherwise they would not have kept their (belligerent)identities and the wars in the 1990s would not happen.
You can also keep identities and become part of a union but the balkan countries are really unique, despite being similar. Some semi EU type of situation where we include Albania and Greece would be good. Not sure the Greeks would accept it though,
Some kind of union on different grounds of all balkan countries would be good.
Thanks but no thanks. The idea for this state did enough damage to Bulgaria, even without ever existing. As any grand idea by the Communists.
With the serbians, never. Maybe if we had 50% control but they would have never agreed
After Georgi Dimitrov died it was obvious that Bulgaria wasn’t joining Yugoslavia, so Tito, knowing that there were some 1.5m-2m+ Bulgarians in Yugoslavia (in vardar Macedonia and around Pirot) who he didn’t want interfering with his South Slavic Brotherhood sort of thing and began the process of Macedonization, which btw took place in Pirin Macedonia too (where I live). Definitely not a fan after what happened last time a people (or rather ultranationalists) decided it was time for United south slavs…but with one people above the others.
Go back to USA, there is only pain for you here.
In reality Yugoslavia was tool for Serbian nationalists to gain power over other Balkan folk
It seems like I’m the only one here, but I think that a Greater Yugoslavia would actually have been a good thing and that with us in it would have prevented a Serbian dominance. Anyways it won’t happen and the situation now makes it impossible to work. Nice alternate history scenario though
Screw Greater Yugoslavia. However, I do welcome the idea of a Balkan Union, even if it does seem a bit pointless if the Western Balkans join the EU and Schengen.
Personally I am thankful to the Serbian king back in XIXth century who did not go through with combining Bulgaria and Serbia in one country. It saved us from participating in the Yugoslavian wars back in the ‘90s.
I would rather die than be in the same nation as serbs. Thankfully, it didn’t happen.
With the Serbs on top it was always a “pass”!
We already saw how Yugoslavia ended. Greater Yugoslavia would have fallen apart even sooner. Serbia’s delusions of grandeur and attempts to dominate the rest doomed it. You can’t have nationalists in charge of a multi-ethnic federation, and expect it to survive for long.
I think not
Id rather cut my veins
Fuck that, greater Bulgaria forever
The hardest possible pass. Fuck tito hope he rots in hell where all the tortured or killed during his dictatorship get to spit on him every minute.
If Serbia controlled everything like in the normal Yugoslavia then no
Yugoslavia, in the format it took place in fact, appeared to be an imperialist dream-come-true of self proclaimed anti-fascist, in reality schovinist nationalists of Serbia. Tito and his inheritors. What would make anyone think that if Bulgaria was a part of this Yugoslavia, there would be a significant difference, except that the imperialist sentiments of Belgrade would be even bigger and more aggressive?
As much as I criticize the communist regime in Bulgaria, I don’t see anything major that we would’ve gained by joining Yugoslavia. However, I can see a few major things we would’ve lost, so I’d say us not joining was a positive turn of events.
This 💩would have led to way more bloodshed in the 90s
Funny man

This is a country you’d make in a paradox game.
