Has been debunked by Heritage Malta and other reputable entities.
There are folk tales like these about alot of the catacombs, tunnels and shelters scattered throughout the island, most of them made up by parents who wanted to discourage children from wandering into these unsafe areas. The one about the Hypogeum gets alot of attention because the Hypogeum itself is a popular site among the archeology, history and conspiracy communities.
Haha .. what the knights had built an underground system?
Hogwash for sure ..
Fake as regards to Malta. However I first heard this story when I was in Catania, Sicily. I was told the incident happened on that island. Probably a myth.
Well not sure about this story but I know for fact that in my old school Verdala Bormla there are shelters that lead to Paola.
What catacombs? I mean sure there are plenty of bomb shelters/catacombs but that they are all linked throughout malta? That’s news to me…
I don’t think there are any mazes in malta big enough for people to get lost in AND never got found. If there is any story like that i wouldn’t believe it.
I would like to believe that the Hypogeum extends further than what has been made public but I doubt that a group of school children ever got lost here. There have been various myths that have been debunked over the years.
What I find highly interesting is how they created this whole space without proper lights. Did they use fire? Did they keep fires lit during ceremonies? What about the murals found inside? One was removed apparently.
