You’d think the article might push the idea that we should maybe do better at prosecuting the people murdering our existing top predators.
Basically “because the masses are emotional morons”. All it takes is one person / pet / livestock animal getting hurt or killed by a reintroduced wolf and you can picture the Daily Mail headlines the next day. “RADICAL LEFTY ENVIRONMENTALISTS WANT YOUR KIDS TO BE EATEN BY RABID WOLVES”. Unfortunately the general public have no idea about the benefits that rewilding would have for the country, so I guess it would start with education on the subject. But tbh we can’t really wait for everyone to be on board with it, we should be doing everything we can right now to restore the ancient ecosystems of our island.
As much as I’d love for their reintroduction, we need to rewild more areas too. If United Utilities and Yorkshire water were nationalised, a lot of moorland, uplands, and surrounding areas would come into public ownership. This land is perfect for rewilding.
Rewet the peatbogs, restore the heathland, and reforest the now barren grasslands.
None of this, or the changes Ray suggests, are possible under this government.
I would have thought he was the generation that got Brut rather than Lynx?
ELI5 why we need these animals back? Wolves? Really?
Pretty sure they did a study a while back about reintroducing Lynx and it concluded England doesn’t have enough continuous woodland to support a viable population of lynx. Lynx don’t like humans and need areas with little human activity which is unfortunately not much of the UK. Better in Scotland but you still have similar issues.
I would love for these animals to come back but the environment for it does not exist in the UK right now.
Is it because the peasants aren’t weak enough? Another decade of austerity perhaps.
Pretty ironic to say “I don’t think we have the right to play God” when it was humans playing God that got rid of them in the first place.
Well no more wild camping and hiking. Inb4 i get ripped to shreds by wolves at the Cairngorms.

If they really go ahead and put wolves and lynxes back into the environment, but still make it illegal to carry any item for the purpose of defending yourself, I’m not sure if I’ll laugh or cry.
how on earth are people implying it would be a good thing if we did that? is it just the romanticism of the idea of wild animals?
What the reintroduction of wolves has done in Yellowstone National Park has been nothing short of phenomenal. They have touched almost every single aspect of that larger ecosystem for the better. I’m all for it, it would do the environment so much good and would be a natural solution to the vast deer problem here.
A lot of people still have a Disneyfied view of nature, preferring a sanitised, orderly view of it, compared to the rough reality of what wildlife truly is. It is either that or they love nature, just as long as it is nowhere near them. My downstairs neighbours love Countryfile but hate birds in the car park because they poo everywhere. It is views like that which threaten biodiversity and is why we will never have our old apex predators back.
I can’t imagine wolves will ever be reintroduced. But I can’t imagine if you introduced a few lynx they’d do any harm, I doubt anyone would even see them
Well big cats are already out there in the wild!
But I don’t want wolves back in the Uk! We have enough of a problem with vicious dogs attacking people.
Bit disingenuous to just gloss over beavers as “successful” – they are hated by farmers in the area they are most commonly found (Tayside).
This is a very weird obsession, and not one I support
If the deer are such a big issue – as people on this thread have been saying – then let’s deal with the deer ourselves
Bad idea. Please stop doing all the terrible, stupid things the US does. You will be a better country for it.
They already reintroduced Lynx Africa. I think that’s enough.
Is it that time of the year already? Can’t wait for the free school diners revelations. And, daylight saving time shocker slammed!
Christ the UK is struggling with aggressive dogs nevermind wolves and lynxs
