I’m working on a list of every country’s most iconic cult film (list here: https://boxd.it/n5ZFs) and wondered if anyone could help me figure out Slovenia’s entry.
I’m looking for a film that might not be well-known outside the country’s borders. Perhaps it’s a film everyone knows, and is hugely popular only to Slovenian audiences, even if it wasn’t popular with critics. Or maybe it’s a film that wasn’t well-received by audiences or critics, but has gained a cult following in the years since its release.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

  1. All of the other answers given are technically correct, but I’d argue Tu pa Tam is the closest to the actual definition of a “cult movie”. Pr Hostar, too, because the creator have a large following outside of that movie, so most fans of that movie are also fans of that comedy troupe (think Brain Candy, Monty Python movies, a lot of SNL movies, Super Troopers, Superstar…). Otherwise Kekec is a very very obvious choice, as are Poletje v Skoljki and Sreca na Vrvici. Outsider, Distorzija, Jebiga, V Leru, Odgrobadogroba all kinda belong to certain school of slovenian cinema that was made more for certain subcultures as opposed to critics and TV. Siska Deluxe too, it’s kiiiiind of a slovenian stoner comedy in the vein of Smiley Face or How High. Ameba is pretty obscure, but It’s the type of movie that fits into a larger scheme of the lore of a slovenian band, so the “cult” in question is just the fanbase of that band. Medusa Raft would be another great contender, but a lot of people whould say “who even watched that?”

Poletje v Skoljki, Kekec, Sreca na Vrvici, Babica gre na Jug would be the safest bets… Pr Hostar and Gremo mi Po svoje if you’re looking at popularity within Slovenian audiences, Tu Pa Tam if you are going strictly by the definition of what a “cult” movie is.

  2. u/thewarinspector you can prepare a survey with the answers here. It would be interesting to see which film wins.

  3. People here not understanding the difference between a classic and a cult film.

    Vesna and Kekec are classics.

Outsider, Jebiga and Tu pa tam are cult classics.

  4. Most of comments dont know what a cult film is and are listing old movies everybody knows, have watched and finds them great.

Tu pa tam probably fits best in that category

    Outsider is also close
