We call these “dodys” (pronounced dough-dees) or “dumb tits” in Co Tipp. But my Dublin wife laughs and says they’re “soothers”.

  1. Wexford, a dodie. Wife is Cork, she says dummy.

Grandfather (would have been 100 this year) used to call them a dumb-tit. Which I’m sure is the origin of dummy!

  2. I’m too old to be only realising sooder is spelled soother. And discovering that the word is descriptive of the service it provides… To soothe!!

  3. From Newfoundland – it was a dummy or soother. Old ppl sometimes used the term ‘dumb tit’ lol. And we learned the ‘proper’ word was supposedly pacifier.
