Jail for man who called gardaí ‘scumbags’

  1. The address seems to indicate he was living in accomodation run by the Peter McVerry Trust and as stated in the article he had spent time in the care of the State as a child.

I’m a little uncomfortable with the idea that the judge noted those circumstances and treated him worse than other 19 year olds who commit the same offence.

  2. He’ll be out tomorrow….I don’t mean that in the flippant stupid way that most of the experts on here do….he’ll actually be out tomorrow.

  3. A teenager, because that’s what he is, got prison time for telling cops to fuck off after being arrested for being intoxicated publicly but wasn’t charged with the public intoxication offence and was charged for telling the cops to fuck off?

Man what’s happening to being able to talk freely, it’s slowly being destroyed. Prison time for telling anyone to fuck off is insane!!

  4. I told the guards to fuck off when I was about 18. I was out for a bike ride and moved to go around a puddle which extended almost to the centre of the road.

Whilst moving out a car behind me beeped their horn and held it on. Reflexively I turned around and told them to fuck off. It was then I saw it was the guards.

They didn’t take it well. One of them pulled my bike off me and threw it in the hedge. I remember his top lip was trembling.

Apparently they were in a hurry to go somewhere else so they let me off. But not so big a hurry that they couldn’t stop to harass me a bit.

  5. Hey on the plus side, the refurbishment of their Garden of Remembrance means that Phoenix Park finally has a public toilet

  6. He should have committed a worse crime. People beat old women, commit rape and even go round in gangs assaulting people and get lighter sentences. There was even that judge who had a tonne of kiddie porn in his computer who didn’t get a harsh sentence.

But this lad gets drunk and mouths off to the guards and they throw the book at him

  7. A cop who arrests someone for calling them a scumbag is an incredibly insecure person and ought not to have any power at all. It’s pathetic. That’s not even a threat it’s more a statement of fact.

  8. Every single issue of the Phoenix for the last 40 years has a section called Bog Cuttings of local court reporting. The quotes juxtaposed with sober court language are hilarious, but by the end of them I’m always raging at the sentences. Saying mean words to Gardaí has been a disproportionally punished crime since forever but you never hear the “free speech” crowd mention this. Abusing gays and foreigners for who they are? Grand, no worries. Mean to a guard once? Off to fucking jail with ye.
