I’m working on a list of every country’s most iconic cult film (list here: https://boxd.it/n5ZFs) and wondered if anyone could help me figure out Cyprus’ entry.
I’m looking for a film that might not be well-known outside the country’s borders. Perhaps it’s a film everyone knows, and is hugely popular only to Cypriot audiences, even if it wasn’t popular with critics. Or maybe it’s a film that wasn’t well-received by audiences or critics, but has gained a cult following in the years since its release.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Cypriot spaghetti western from the 70s

I would say
“Vourate geitonoi, the movie”
Tough choice because Cypriot cinema wasn’t particularly popular even in Cyprus.
Smuggling Hendrix is a good shout for modern ones.
Exodus is not a Cypriot film per se, but was filmed in Cyprus (and Israel) and it also won an Oscar I think.
Then you have others like Rotsos 1 ([https://www.cycinema.live/tainies/rotsos.html](https://www.cycinema.live/tainies/rotsos.html)) that were fairly well known back in the day. It stars Andreas Argyridis who is one of the pioneers of original Cyprus cinema, theater, standup comedy and TV.
For recent, there is also Jiu Jitsu starring Nic Cage, which is an incredibly shit movie but everyone knows about (for all the wrong reasons). It was made purely for tax breaks (Cyprus wanted to become like a filming destination so offered incentives). But then they didn’t pay and now the company is suing for the money. Good times.
A personal fave of mine is Kalabush but nobody really knows it, so there’s that…
