Nearly half eligible for rent tax relief yet to apply

  1. I wonder how many aren’t sure if their place is RTB registered and are afraid to rock the boat with their landlord? Would rather be down a few hundred euro than be told “actually, I need the place for a family member”.

  2. I got my 2022 one, but haven’t applied for 2023 yet. Is it better to do it now, or wait until Jan 2024 (when I do my usual tax return)?

  3. Why is the onus on the tenant to provide the rtb number?

I know you dont need it to enter it but it shouldnt be up to the tenant to ensure the landlord is compliant.

A simple solution here is to let the RTB share its database with revenue.

  4. We haven’t applied for it. Can’t find the property on RTB and although our LL is a lovely man, I just can’t muster the courage to ask him about it. It took us months to be picked for a place, and we’re not being screwed rent-wise at all compared to most other people. We love our little apartment and I don’t know what we would do if we were turfed out.

It is annoying though and the €1000 would cover a car insurance etc and some bills which would be really handy.

  5. Last 3 places I lived were unregistered, cash in landlords hand every month situations and I’d confidently say that there are tens of thousands of others in the same situation

  6. I’d prefer to not rock the boat with our landlord and stay in our accommodation which is overpriced but still “affordable” by todays standards.

The potential hassle is definitely not worth the €10 a week or thereabouts.

  7. You do not need the RTB number to apply. You can just leave that part blank. You do not need to interact at all with your landlord in order to receive the payment. It is frustrating to see so many people lose out for fear of bothering their landlord.

  8. I’d say it’s more to do with ros not bothering there hole. Waiting 3 months on a reply now after repeatingly asking wtf

  9. Know four people who don’t want to claim as the landlord isn’t registered with RTB and explicitly told them if he has to register he will put up the rent as he is charging below “market value”. They don’t think they will find other accommodation.
