“The officer who fired the fatal shots at George Nkencho (27) will also be told if he faces potential criminal or disciplinary sanctions, or whether he has been cleared of any wrongdoing.”
Expect a shitshow either way.
Prayers for the Garda member and his family for having to go through this.
Attacked a shop-keeper. Fled gardaí. They tried to de-escalate and disarm him with non-lethal means. He tried to attack them with a blade and they were forced to use a gun.
Did I get anything wrong? I understand his family’s anger as nobody wants to lose a relative like that. But from what I’ve seen, he was given ample chance to surrender peacefully and didn’t.
What fucking irked me was that rent-a-mob crowd trying to liken it to American police who do have a history of killing black people without merit. That was not the case here and Irish Gardaí do not have a history of shooting black people here. It was embarrassing.
Either way, people aren’t going to be happy.
Fucker fucked around and found out.
No matter what happens they’re going to scream about racism
I found attempts to make this about race so incredibly pathetic. A man was wildly swinging a machete with intent to cause harm and was, resultantly, shot dead.
I might be downvoted to all hell for saying this but I firmly believe that there is a significant problem amongst particularly young, black men in Ireland and the UK where they are worshiping gang culture in the States and trying to apply it in a very-different cultural setting. We do not have the same problems with police here and it’s disheartening to see youths in Galway referring to the guards as “Feds” or “Pigs” and acting as general disruptions to the peace.
Choose to go at armed police with a deadly weapon and you will be shot. Is there anywhere in the world where this wouldn’t happen?
It’s really not rocket science.
Sick of hearing about this shite. Hope it’s the end but I’ve no doubt it isn’t
Its a heart breaking cases, but he was armed and recently attacked a shop keeper. This case is nothing compared to something like George Floyd. Tragic that he lost his life, but he was armed and had just attacked someone already.
Does everyone remember the mini riots after this? Where a bunch of people had to be locked in a shop for their own safety while a gang of black people shouted racist abuse / threats at them from outside? What a surreal week that was.
GSOC’s findings have found that this lad fucked around and found out.
I remember this happening. Happened at the wrong time given the actual blm protests for a good cause in the States. Had loads of my friends ( I’m black and so are most of my friends) acting like he was gunned down for racist reasons or, like the anti black racism in Ireland, normally led to garda shootings. The guy was mentally unwell, brandishing a weapon at guards who tried to make him surrender peacefully. I feel for his family, but cmon now.
Also, on the flip side, anyone using this as an excuse that ” all they do is complain about racism that isn’t there ” bla bla bla. Yeah, there is actually anti black racism in this country, and it’s probably on the rise. Using 1 incident to downplay any outcry against racism doesn’t exactly paint you in a good light.
It’s absolutely insane how people tried to make this about race.
Fuck Hazel Chu!
Anyone else recall his brother trying to incites a crowd against the Garda
Felt the Government weak comments and intervention helped burn this flame and have lent to a real openness in terms of attacking police or going OTT eith investigations.
Of course it’s a tragedy for the family. Regardless of circumstances still a son or a brother etc. so I get it’s hard for them. And grief does weird shit. Your always looking for someone to blame. And that fact he was actually killed gives more fuel to the blame with grief.
But I’ll never forget how weak politicians were in that week. The minister for justice making public comment was outragous. I get they wanted to avoid a George Floyd situation but that it was GSOC is there for.
It was a total blunder not easily forgotten and considering the charging of that Guard recently in the pursuit, FG can spin all they want but they’ve no credibility for being a party of law and order like they claim.
Like if you look back at the comments and even the meeting she took. There is being genuinely considerate to families, there is being politically cute, and then there is making a hash of it. This was the latter
It did my head in how the press never dared mention how they ignored covid rules. I broke the rules, we were selfish crackpots, but if you were a BLM protester no rules apply.
This shooting was completely justified , an absolute menace by all accounts. Imagine the poor neighbours and locals he brought misery on , good riddance
Watch all the idiots compare this to the BLM movement in america.
This has nothing to do with race, Ireland isn’t America.
Shooting him was justified. A formal enquiry into this is a joke. You can’t get a more clear cut justifiable use of force if you tried.
Have a friend in the gards, he read the report. The main reason stated is “fuck around and find out”.
A kitchen knife, no matter how small, becomes a weapon as soon as you threaten someone with it.
He should have complied with AGS directions, or his family should have controlled him. AGS did their job, and plenty will criticise and give alternatives to what “should have been done,” but AGS did what they are trained to do in that situation.
You don’t break out the emergency tea set because someone has mental issues.
The family seem like a bunch of opportunist scumbags, who wanted nothing to do with him, until it became financially viable.
Poor timing for GSOC after the prosecution of the Garda in relation to the burglars crashing. Their credibility is damaged and if they say this Garda did something wrong, it will look like a campaign against the Gardaí to many people.
Ah Hazel Chu…the brainwashed race baiting idiot trying to americanise an irish issue. Twat.
I will always feel sorry for the poor officer or officers that had to discharge there weapons that day. This isn’t america and the armed guards aren’t ever really expected to fire: So I am sure those poor lads or lassies are dealing with ptsd.
Fact remains he was given every opportunity to deescalate the situation but he choose the later. So sadly the guards were left with no other option. It’s a mental health issue if anything and certainly race had nothing to do with it.
If it was a Northside Dublin man with a similar record and crime there wouldn’t be such a song and dance about it.
Play stupid games, etc. The end.
Ah its days like this I wish I wasn’t blocked on social media by the likes of “rowdy” Ruth Coppinger and that Nigerian woman who race grifts for UCD.
I believe the guard was justified in his actions. However my guess is GSOC will make more out of this. Judging my the travelers deaths
Don’t know why there’s an investigation. The guards were in fear for their lives and did everything correctly up to that point. Also others were in fear of him also. Didn’t deserve to die but unfortunately that’s the way it turned out
Family just looking for a payout from the state, fuck these people, what annoyed me more was the bunch of clowns that protested outside the garda station over it,fucking wasters
I think everyone knows what the result will be after all this time. I’d even speculate that GSOC delayed it as long as possible to allow time to defuse tension before they give their findings to the family of the deceased.
There’s socialist councillors on Twitter already drumming up outrage over this claiming that Nkencho was “shot multiple times in the back while walking back to his family home”. These people will be trying to organize protests tomorrow no doubt. In my opinion it’s very clear cut, they tried everything they could to get the knife off him and to stop him but he chose to ignore all efforts. The armed Gardai obviously couldn’t let him into his house as he could have butchered his family like that tragic case in Tallaght recently. The fact he wouldn’t drop the knife they had to assume he was bringing it in there intending to use it on someone. Very tough on the firearms officer being forced to do it.
Walk around parts of Balbriggan and you will see there is a trend for young POC to act like they are road men from London.
This culture getting imported shite needs to stop. You don’t need a blade “big man” you aren’t a roadman bruvvv
I’m really sick of the notion that the Gardai have an underlying racism problem a la the American police forces. He wasn’t shot because he was going about his daily business, he was shot after all other non-lethal avenues to de-escalate the situation were exhausted.
Family on the news there talking like this was fucking America and he was racially profiled ffs. No love, he was profiled for waving a knife around, assaulting a man doing his job in a shop and generally being a cunt.
