
I’m walking in the Tatra Mountains, using a map I bought locally. Why is the map grid in 1.2×1.8km rectangles? Most other maps I’ve ever seen are in 1km squares.

Because the grid is in degrees lat/lon, not UTM squares? Check the edges of the map.
Because it is designed to only make sense after wódka.
