Hello all,

I’m in the UK and my dad just gave this to me (don’t know why) and he doesn’t know what it is.

Google translate tells me it says Limited Company in Finnish and Swedish and that Forssa is a place in Finland.

Anyone got any extra info about what it is, what it’s for, what do the dates refer to and the seal?

It seems probably pure copper, pretty heavy. My hand is in last photo for scale.

Thanks!

  1. Forssa Osakeyhtiö was a cotton and textile factory, located in Forssa. I put the finnish wikipedia article through google translate and it came out pretty legible, so I’ll share it with you:

Forssa cotton factory was a company located in Forssa, founded in 1857.

Axel Wilhelm Wahren (1814–1885) from Stockholm founded a factory in Forssa under the name Forssa Bomullsspinneri Bolag. It combined in 1859 the cotton weaving mill founded in 1855 by Fabriksbolaget Wahren & Comp in Kossila near Forssa and the Viksberg spinning mill. The name became Forssa Ab, and the owners of Forssa got 64 percent of it and Viksberg 36 percent.[1]

The company had a cotton spinning mill, a weaving mill and a sawmill in Forssa. In 1934[2], Finlayson bought 50.1 percent of Osakeyhtiö Forssa’s shares from Isak Julin. The limited company Forssa was merged with Finlayson in the same year and the new company’s name became Oy Finlayson-Forssa Ab. Later, it was separated into a workwear manufacturing company, and under the name Finlayson continued the manufacture of interior textiles. In November 2008, Finlayson-Forssa Oy announced bankruptcy. Work at the factory ended due to bankruptcy on January 23, 2009.[3] Finlayson Oy, on the other hand, shut down the Forssa production unit in September 2009, but the company’s model department and logistics center still remained in the city. The logistics center was closed in spring 2019.

After the sawmill stopped its operations, the Prisma shopping center was built in 2009-2010.

At the end of the 1850s, the factory had more than 300 employees, and it was the largest textile factory operating in the countryside. It mainly employed women and children of its own and close relatives.[4]

Today, the biggest user in Forssa Oy’s spinning area is Häme University of Applied Sciences. In addition, e.g. local civic college (Wahren College), bowling alley, kindergarten and library. in the weaving on the old side works e.g. care, well-being and health services. On the newer side, in the former automatic loom, there is a shopping center led by Kesko.

    e. I have no idea what the item is, but the dates are from forming of the Forssa Oy to the merger with Finlayson, some kind of memorabilia for senior workers maybe?

e.e. I concur with the ashtray guess from the other fella.

  2. ” One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”

  3. Thats probaply ashtray. And it has something to do with forssa company. My great aunt had similar thing that she received from company(not sure if it was forssa) thanks to beign their emplyee for long time. (Somekind of award or trophy now expensive for collectors)

Anyway this might be big money for collectors

  4. The letters are Finnish, of an ancient mode, but the language is that of Forssa, which I will not utter here. But this in the Common Tongue is what is said, close enough:

    A joint-stock company
    Forssa
    A joint-stock company

  5. I live in Finland. This looks interesting. I have taken the liberty to share your post to public in my Facebook. I will send your info to all of my Finnish acquaintances, hopefully someone may be able to answer your question. 😊
