Man who wore offensive Hillsborough shirt that said “Not Enough – 97” says it’s because “my grandad died aged 97 and didn’t have enough kids”

  1. From the BBC;

    > White was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £400 and £85 in costs.

    > He has also been banned from all regulated football games in the UK for four years.

  2. He’s missed his calling. With excuses (lies) like that he should look at putting himself forward as a tory candidate.

  3. Weird hill to die on. Just claim you were ignorant to the tragedy and came across the shirt while looking for something that would rile up rival fans. The fact Liverpool weren’t even playing in the game would make that seem more plausible.

  4. The same laws that were used to charge this man are probably the same that were used when arresting the anti-monarchy protestors.

Vague laws surrounding the display of “offensive” and “threatening” messages, which the police can use to arrest and charge anyone they like.

  5. I mean if he’s going to lie, at least come up with something remotely plausible. I’m sure I read at the time that people tried to explain it away as when Liverpool got 97 points and still didn’t win the league. Obvious bullshit but would have been more plausible.

  6. Offensive ? Yes

Is he a cunt ? Seems to be

Should you be fined for offending people ? Not in my opinion, it wasn’t a call to violence, it shouldn’t be an offence to be offensive to the “common” public morals.

  7. I have no respect for people making jokes out of this issue, but I have even less for cowards who once busted for it yet to pretend it meant something, anything, else.

  8. Football seems to attract so many idiots. How people can use shocking disasters like Hillsborough just for petty team rivalry digs is beyond me. These type need to be banned from attending football stadiums.

  9. says it’s because “my grandad died aged 97 and didn’t have enough kids” Add perjury to his list of crimes.

  10. This is one of those cases where everyone ignores the creep into an authoritarian dystopia because nobody finds his tasteless joke funny, but it shouldn’t be illegal to make dark or offensive jokes.

  11. He’s a right shit, no doubt, with a face you want to beat with a bag of angry hornets. But arrested over a shirt for it being offensive? Have they heard half the filth shouted at a match like that?

  12. Literally a better explanation would have been that he thought the police hadn’t done enough about the disaster.

  13. The state should not be punishing people for what t-shirt they are wearing. No matter how tasteless it is

The club however should ban him.

  14. Surely this statement would be very easy to verify with a little digging. I’m curious if someone proves no 97 year old dead grandfather existed would he face charges for purjury?

  15. All he had to say, was not enough “done” and not not enough “died.” The reader is after all providing the extra language to make it offensive when it does not have to be.

Personally, I want to live in a free society where I find that I can be offended by others… Anything less isn’t really a free society.

  16. He’s obviously a cretin but is there really any need for the police and courts to get involved? Really?

  17. The fact he got charged for this is a joke , people make jokes about awful events all the time , at most he should have just been politely asked to take the shirt off or leave the stadium

  18. My friend is a missionary and on his last visit abroad brought back with him the chief of a famous tribe. His name is Great Boo. He’s been suffering from sleeping sickness and he’s obviously just woken because as you’ve heard, Great Boo’s up.

  19. How could you possibly think that was a good idea? Smug little twats trying to dig his way out now. Should be a politician. Scum.

  20. He could have at least argued that not enough was done to hold the sun to account for its actions around hilsbrough, and that the 97 deaths are not the full extent of the victims.

But mostly he’s just a gobshite

  21. Idiot could have used the excuse that he was mocking Liverpool’s highest ever second place finish, but he went for something even more stupid.

  22. I don’t think offensive speech or imagery should be illegal.

The venue telling him to fuck off would be fine and everyone chanting that he is a cunt would both be fine.

  23. If a “Nazi” Saluting PUG is enough to get a criminal record it wouldn’t surprise me if this does.

One was clearly a joke while this one is a bit more blurred…

  24. Uhu, and Jeremy Clarkson had that H982 FLK numberplate by random chance.

Everyone always seems to have a good story when they get into some shit

  25. “My tattoo declaring that we must protect a future for our white children is actually a sweet dedication to my maiden name White and a reminder to put savings into their college funds.”
