Hello! Military surplus enthusiast here. Anyone familiar with these? Apparently from what I’ve read these were worn by officers post Cold War. Are they real fur? In the US we used to have ushanka style hats but from faux fur. The idea of real fur in military clothing is unheard of so I find this hat interesting. Thank you!

the design does not look like cold war (czecho)slovak officer hats at all, looks more like austrian mountain troops hat with some fur cover on or something similar

also I know fuck all just googled it 😀
In the time “post Cold War” there was still the old stuff in use for more than a decade. This is the “fur winter hat” i. e. ušianka/baranica which is original ČSĽA (People’s Army during the rule of Communists): https://www.naprezitie.sk/baranice/baranica-originalna-armadna-csla-zimna-3746.html.
Similar/identical hats were still in use in 90’s/early 00’s:

An here’s one ušianka from WWII:

It’s roughly the same design(based on Soviet one) since WWII.
The thing you posted is very weird looking.
This gives me flashbacks of grandmas dog hide coat. She also had one from fox hide. I had it on me once and it fell apart, literally because stitches were too old. I was given unopened czechoslovak ushanka from grandfather, that one served well. And made from sheep.
Just a wild guess- Slovenia instead of Slovakia?
Slovak soldier here. I’m not familiar with this model of winter hat and i’m pretty active on army bazars. I can only make an educated guess that this isn’t and never was our design, since all cold winter hats – both soviet and post soviet – are ushankas and all of them were made black or grey.
