Keir Starmer to ‘throw everything’ at plan to get UK to net zero

  1. I hope he gives an actual, detailed, costed plan, instead of what he’s been doing the last couple of years which is saying ‘yeah we’ll do it, trust us bro’.

If Starmer is serious about green energy then I reckon he’ll win quite a few votes, but I’m worried this is just going to be more bluster with zero substance again.

  2. > Labour’s plans also include insulating 19 million homes, setting up a national energy company, decarbonising electricity supply by 2030 and a national wealth fund to invest in green infrastructure.

This all sounds all sounds fantastic (as well as the main stuff about onshore infrastructure and North Sea oil, obviously).

I’ve never voted Labour before, (LibDem or Green, depending on specifics each election) but this plan might convince me. It seems like a really sensible approach to doing what we can to fight the climate crisis while at the same time providing loads of new jobs and upgrading the country’s infrastructure.

The only small addition it needs is a free training/certification program to migrate oil industry workers into green energy jobs and then there should be almost no objections to these ideas from anyone.

  3. It won’t happen, I have no faith in anyone any more. Scientists warned the world leaders for decades and very little happened. Now, politicians continue to make promises, the world is cooking, we temporarily hit 1.5°C above baseline, crops fail, the oceans are the hottest they’ve ever been, and the scientists tell us the loss of Arctic sea ice is inevitable and a 10°C world is probably.

  4. Upgrading the grid is critical to this – which means more overhead power lines in rural areas and a lot of digging in the road in cities

Is it going to include permitting solar panels, double glazing, exterior shutters or blinds, and other insulation on all buildings, so that the 5% of housing in Conservation Areas and listed buildings don’t get frozen out of joining in? Or are we going to be left to pay large and increasing energy bills as usual?

  5. Seems like good broard ideas, although not a lot of substance. Hope it doesn’t go the way of his 10 pledges.

Although not sure how a lot of what he promises will be achievable with a “fiscally responsible” Treasury. Assume “fiscally responsible” is coded language for austerity type thinking.

  6. I’m all for this but I think it’s only going to do more to push away the working class we’ve seen going to parties like reform, they couldn’t give less of a shit about net zero and see it as another tax on poor people. There’s ghouls out there pushing dark messaging around it and all they want is more money and lower prices.

  7. He is quite literally doing the interview circuit today admitting that he has dropped his no new oil and gas ‘pledge’…

This client journalism needs to end

  8. The UK will be net zero!
But all our manufacturing will be done in China and India so we can complain about how bad those countries are and how they really need to change otherwise we might have to go to war

  9. Everything except tackle the actual problem, which is capitalism and imperialism?

Yeah, thought so. Anyway, we can’t give up on capitalism, because we need the economic and profit lines to go up. And we can’t give up on imperialism, because oppressing people thousands of miles away makes us feel big and important.

  10. News just in- labour’s new policy proposal (yes they do have them sometimes) is Keir himself to float up and down the North Sea blowing at the offshore wind turbines.

  11. FINALLY! Some Labour plans I can get behind! Well done Starmer, you’re finally earning my vote. Now make some equally great promises about the NHS!

  12. There’s obviously a big caveat of ‘I’ll believe it when I see it” but it sounds promising and not totally pie in the sky, which is a good start.

  13. With our wind and our wave and tidal resources exploited to the maximum, and with home batteries widely installed, surely we can become almost self-reliant and net zero?

  14. The UK is freefalling towards net zero everything, like jobs and the economy. Pretty soon the UK and Britain will be net zero also when it breaks up.

  15. Great – now he just needs to grow a pair about Brexit and admit it’s royally fucked the country and we need to rejoin the EU asap. Until Labour offers that, they can get fucked.

  16. Great I’ll be eating gruul with no heating then due to the cost going through roof to cover all this .
The fake working class will be fine though still going on their holidays in France for the summer though .

  17. Does this take into account all our exported emissions in China? Because if it doesn’t it’s irrelevant.

  18. Laudable but we have huge sunk costs in Edwardian/Victorian housing. Borrowing to do this will keep interest rates high for another decade I imagine.

  19. I just don’t believe him. He will say this now and then after the election ‘ah actually we can’t because I receive too much money from oil’

  20. ‘Keir Starmer says more words we wants the public to hear him say whilst having no intentions or every following through’ would be a better headline

  21. I’d prefer if government invested in creating its own energy production and supply that is purely from renewable sources. Then they could supply us energy with no requirement to create profits/appease shareholders. As long as the citizens get the energy we need. Costs may be high at the start to get infra in place but over the long run it would be considerably cheaper for us. Also added bonus of our energy not being tied to global markets.

  22. After talking to people who work in the national grid starmer sees that the major barrier to green energy is the current energy grid and being able to tie Into it. That alone is a huge national infrastructure project. By keeping his goals realistic he is putting off greener goals but seems to be going in the right direction.

  23. It does sound like a good plan, but are we also addressing the housing shortage? Because we really can’t build our economy purely on FIRE.

  24. I hate the tories and will vote appropriately to get them out but Starmer’s promises and pledges are written on water. I don’t believe a word he says.

  25. Another Trudeau. He’ll be hop skipping and jumping to Klaus Schwab’s tune. Nothing will change under a Labour government. It’ll be just a different flavour shit sandwich.

  26. How about we raise peoples wages and lower bills before wasting even more of our money on net zero.

We want more money in our pockets now.

  27. Pipe Dreams, especially when the big 4 countries will never come in line with the rest of us even if we can get 50% towards that figure which we wont. Ill be swimming to work be fore this ever happens

  28. When will these people wake up, it will not work!!! were will all the rare earth minerals coming from for the lithium iron batterie, what will happen when it’s not windy or sunny, what will happen to all the cow’s & the industries that we need to make electric cars windmills & batteries!

We should do something but not panic & put all our egg into one net zero basket!
A well consider & safe transition is what we need!

  29. Jokes on him. A significant proportion of us will be burning our belongings in oil drums, crowded into homeless ghettos once this crash is done with us. /s ?
