Definitely the biggest long term health issue facing the NHS and the country, yet it’s a political hot potato so the can just keeps getting kicked.
Just one of the reasons why it’s important to make the weight loss jab as accessible as possible.
I’d also like to see the Newcastle diet rolled out far more broadly which has shown to reverse diabetes for those who have had the disease for less than 10 years.
I wonder if it would help if the NHS expanded its staff to include personal trainers and prescribed gym and nutrition plans.
Obesity is often a symptom, rather than the actual problem. Support people and fix the root causes (e.g. mental health problems) and you can drive obesity and the associated costs down.
It’s no wonder because when you go to the supermarket it is nearly always the (super) processed foods that are on offer, that are high in fat, sugar and salt. A family on a low/average income are often forced to buy chips, bangers burgers, etc. because fresh potatoes, fruit, veg, meat, etc. are just too expensive.
Most people are not eating properly and not exercising enough.
Unless you have an underlying health issue, mental or physical, there is absolutely no excuse to be obese.
We now can’t get hay fever medications prescribed but will still get obesity related medication?
I’m regularly at the GP or hospital currently for a health issue that has flared up.
Honestly I just find it shocking every time. The proportion of people using the NHS who are old, obese, drinkers, smokers, it is genuinely shocking. I swear seeing the nurse it seems like 90% of their time is just dealing with alcoholic diabetics who have a number of chronic wounds that aren’t healing. Must be a real shit job.
The thing with prescriptions is, it’s far too easy to just tick the ‘currently on benefits’ box on your form, and hey presto free prescription. They never check it either. I bet they could get this number down if they did more stringent checks on peoples eligibility for free prescriptions. I’m not saying those on benefits, shouldn’t be entitled to them before anyone jumps on my back, they absolutely should. But I bet there’s a significant chunk of people in the uk who should be paying for theirs but aren’t.
Fat bastards need to put the fork down and go for walks until they can run.
Deny them healthcare for any obesity related illnesses.
Fucks me off that you can eat yourself into diabetes, fail to properly treat your self induced life reducing illness, cost the NHS thousands a year in treatments and medications, continue to fail to eat properly, have a limb removed due to complications of diabetic mismanagement, get rehab, a wheelchair, disability support and eventually end of life care all on the NHS… All coz you refuse to stop eating too much sugary food.
Meanwhile I’m born with relatively severe myopia (short sightedness) as a result of my genes and through no fault of my own, and I get £9.70 towards my glasses that cost in excess of £200 due to the lenses required for my prescription. Repeat this with a multitude of other congenital conditions. Seems fair.
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to subsidise gym memberships? Folks gotta get at it.
For most of human history your health was your responsibility and yours alone.
Disability and chronic diseases notwithstanding, we might benefit from a return to more personal responsibility.
Need to be more brutal with overweight people IMO.
Move away from educating about food groups, calories and so on. That’s been taught since at least the 70s and has made no difference.
Instead teach
Not feeling full up does not mean you are hungry.
You do not have to fill yourself to the brim every meal.
Sure there are some people with physical/mental problems with their weight but the vast majority are just stuffing themselves and probably don’t even realise it.
Listen how are nestle execs and shareholders going to make billions if not exploiting human weakness? Cmon guys!
But let’s defend people addicted to fast food, on the grounds that they’re busy and it’s cheap
Tory 1 “They’re not taking the bait enough with the anti dog stories or with anti cyclist stories. What do we do?”
Tory 2 “Turn them against fat people ?”
Tory 1 “Genius”
Im getting tired of the same obesity copium, you all know what causes this shit and how to fix it
Almost as if artificial sweeteners and chemicals that the body doesn’t know how to break down (which by the way, have been proven to cause DNA damage – see sucralose) are worse for you than natural sugars and the government shouldn’t have taxed sugar, pushing companies to move to artificial poison.
Maybe we should start banning half the crap that’s on the store shelves. Probably save a lot of money. There is no need for anywhere near the amount of sugary shit on the store shelves and they are targeted towards these people.
