Arctic Monkeys accused of ‘butchering’ Glastonbury set

  1. More social media whinging being reported as news.

Before social media, this kind of thing would have been confined to private conversations at the pub/office. Can you imagine a supposedly reputable newspaper writing a headline, “some people at pubs around the country claiming band’s Glasto set did not live up to expectations”? Yet because it’s on social media somehow it’s an acceptable headline.

The media really needs to ween itself off this fabricated social media sourced news. It’s not news and it doesn’t matter.

Edit: This comment now has more interactions that the tweets that provided the basis for their story. I wonder if they’re going to do a story about this! Not a chance!

  2. Saw them in Manchester they were a little slower than the crowd singing along at whatever speed it was on the album but it was still good I still enjoyed it

  3. Watching the set, I thought the newer songs sounded okay with his voice, but they ruined the older ones, by making them downtempo and changing his vocal style.

I know he was meant to have laryngitis recently, and if that decision was made because it was easier on his voice, fair enough, but I’ve read that he does that all the time.

I’d be miffed if I spent money to see them and they gave that performance.

  4. It was like Rick Astley doing a set of Arctic Monkeys set. The same sort of stage presence and he sung the stuff as if he was covering it with a slight sense of irony.

  5. Bit of hyperbole, but I did find them a bit boring although the encore sort of made up for it. Long awkward gaps between songs and the crowd clearly wasn’t interested in the new stuff. Compare to the energy of Foo Fighters earlier and it’s quite a difference.

  6. People are saying he’s sick? Might explain it.

I watched last night and i went to bed half way through, I was waiting for it to start and it never did. AM were great because of their energy, their songs were fast and got you moving.

I remember seeing them in my youth and the WHOLE crowd was bouncing and singing and having a great time. Felt like last night was the opposite of that, you bill AM as a late night headliner, you’re expecting a party.

  7. They were crap at Ashton Gate.

Can’t blame Alex Turner for not wanting to sing songs he wrote as a teenager he’s got little connection with, but that’s what the crowd wants.

The latest stuff is pretentious, indulgent garbage. But then again he cab do what he likes

  8. The performance seemed too slow and low energy even though the set list was as good as I could have hoped for. It was no way near as fun as some of the excellent sets earlier in the day. I am an indie kid but Carly Rae Jepsen won the day for me surprisingly.

  9. I just can’t bear their last two albums and centering performances of their old songs around that new sound doesn’t really work. His singing voice has also become incredibly irritating.

  10. To be fair, I’m not a fan of the band. You can quote me on that.

    Not seen them live.
    Not at Glastonbury.

  11. They were always boring in my opinion anyway, and I think Glastonbury is boring too.

Rather just watch some local band at the pub. Cheaper, better music and less piss on the floor.

  12. I do kind of miss the energy they had during the “Favourite Worst Nightmare” period. To me, that was when they peaked. I mean some of the slower stuff is pretty good, but I miss that punch-in-the-face energy of Brianstorm and similar tunes.

  13. Really feels like the only people who have grown up from 2007 Arctic Monkeys are Arctic Monkeys. So many people seem to have forgotten about the concept of ‘making new music’ and ‘changing aesthetics’.

No different to the people who complained about the Beatles going from cute, suit-wearing rock ‘n’ rollers to psychodellic hippies. Artists grow, just because you don’t doesn’t mean they’re bad people lmao.

  14. People need to let go they are not teenagers any more, and the album AM happened a decade ago.

You have to move with the times.

  15. I went to see them at reading last year, was really disappointed. Definitely one of the worst bands to see live now

  16. The same thing happened to the Stereophonics. Monumental first album that they never topped, then they started wearing leather jackets and growing their hair.

  17. they’ve gone in a new direction as a band now. only for their particular type of fans. nothing wrong with that. i rate a band that decides it doesnt want to be super mainstream anymore.

  18. I find it funny people still go/ watch AM then whinge and moan when they don’t just get the greatest hits. They’ve had a different sound for years now and it’s common knowledge they don’t connect with their old songs as they’re older and tastes change, plus when they do play fan favourites they always play their older stuff in the style of their latest album. You can’t blame the band for only knowing 5 of their songs.

I really enjoyed the Glastonbury set and I’m a big fan of their old and new music.

  19. The tribute band ‘Antarctic Monkeys’ are genuinely better than these now, they play all the hits you want to hear. Turner thinks hes Elvis and just comes across as a total cunt.

  20. Didn’t Alex Turner literally have laryngitis though? Of course he wasn’t at his best. And I agree that they maybe shouldn’t have gone on in that case, but imagine the social media whinging if they’d cancelled? They couldn’t really win with this one.

  21. I personally would’ve hated them just doing it AM style again, they’ve already done that (at Glastonbury!). Now we’ve got the pleasure of two different styles of the same songs to fit different moods. But I can see the argument that paying fans should get to experience the style they expect to hear.

  22. I am going to watch the performance on iPlayer on the back of all this to see ‘just how bad’ it really is.

I suspect it’s just taking the band in new directions to prevent them getting stale, whereas most will want them to just keep playing the hits/stuff in the same style.

You can’t emulate the songs that come from struggle and wanting to hit the big time when you’ve hit it though. You plateau and it becomes bland by default.

  23. They were shit the last 2 times they headlined and they were shit this time.

People moan about the likes of Coldplay & Muse but at least they put on a good show.

I like Arctic Monkeys on record as well but live he just seems like he doesn’t give a shit.
