The recent events in Russia, given their unprecedentedness and global significance, have led us to decide to re-open the sub in a very limited fashion. All other submissions will remain locked, and no new submissions will be accepted, but this thread will be open for commenting and discussion of the aforementioned events.

All other plans (following the community vote this week) remain unchanged, with further news/announcements to the sub due tomorrow (Sunday 25th of June).

  1. Russians in February 2022: “Onward to Berlin! Onward to Lisbon!”

Russians in June 2023: “They can have Rostov, but we will defend Moscow to the last man!”

  2. From”Kyiv in three days” to ”Protect Moscow at all cost”. Putin is a master strategist

  3. this is actually fucking hilarious, a civil war so soon? I see MoD troops just bending over when Wagner comes closer to their points of defense. old-ass NATO machinery really scared all of them.

  4. If Prigozhin’s coup lasts long enough, Putin will have to order some troops back from Ukraine to fight Wagner.

There is a window of opportunity for Ukraine (Wagner is already not in Ukraine anymore) – I wonder if they will try for a big push to break the Russian defensive line now or will wait to see what happens in Russia first.

    I’m hoping for the first.

PS. The closure of this sub is only doing harm to people interested in European affairs and the war in Ukraine, and its impact on Reddit decision-making is almost zero. It’s silly to keep having it closed while most of the news-related subs are open.

  5. What an insane developement to wake up hungover to. What a saturday ahead, beers and NonCredibleDefense browsing. Hopefully Wagner has enough in the tank to cause serious damage.

  6. These momentous historical developments in this greatest european war since WWII are exactly why this api-tantrum-lockdown is so ridiculous and ill timed.

  7. Nice to see mods seeing reason and putting aside the temper tantrum and opening a thread about the coup in Russia.

  8. >’Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).’

  9. The most precious thing I have read is that half of the national guard refuses to fight them, the other half was too drunk to do anything.

  10. In Hungary, accrding to the mainstream media nothing happened. No official statements. No comment

  11. No matter the outcome, all the time and resources they spend shooting at each other are not spent attacking Ukraine. It’s a win no matter what.

  12. Lesson from the Roman Empire #351: Never let your auxiliaries get so powerful that they can take on your main army.

  13. Eastern European here – This is not so suprising to us. They keep fucking up once every 20-40 years in epic proportions. We have been yelling to the West that Russia is not a “Serious Partner”. And that defence is needed against them just in case. Now we are in situation where European defence is in shables, still incapable of efficienty defending region such as Baltics despite 1.5 years of war, without relying on USA.

And we are at a stage that we not only dont know what will happen in next 6 months, we are at a stage that we dont know what will happen in Europe in next 6 weeks.

And we cannot longer pretend that those tanks we keep in storage are in “operational reserve”, they are rust buckets that wont be operational in next 3 years even if we try. And we dont have enough ammunition.

  14. >Putin spoke with the President of Kazakhstan Tokayev, who called the Wagner coup attempt an “internal affair of Russia”.

    PHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

  15. Open the sub you clowns, there is a war in Europe and you are whining about the millions of dollar loss of the Apolloman.

  16. If the coup succeedes one must wonder what the stance of the new government would be in regards of the Ukrainian war. Will they sign a peace treaty loosing Crimea in the process? Will they continue fighting in order to save face perhaps resulting to nuclear weaponary in order to counter balance the lost momentum in the uprising?

This whole situation reminds me of the Great War: the Russians unable to win the conflict end up revolting and signing a peace treaty which sees them loosing many bits of territories, they then close their self in isolationism building resentment and chauvinism.

Edit: secessionist uprisings could also flourish right now, Kardirov is supporting Putin at the moment but in my opinion it’s not that farfetched to see Cecenia and other hot regions throwing a hissy fit.

  17. Open the goddamn sub.
The spread of information on European affairs is more important than this childish mod temper tantrum.

We need to keep all possible channels open for the Ukraine war.

Any details shared on this sub might even save lives, going even beyond the Ukraine war.
    That, or mass resignations.

You have no right to hold this sub hostage of over 4 million subscribers over a vote of a few thousand.

  18. Mods, no one cares about your power struggle with Reddit. Please just open the sub so we can discuss European news again.

  19. If I would live in some other country I would be more exited. But I live in Finland with over a 1000km border with one of the biggest, most unstable and structurally fragile societies in the world.
I’m not happy to see any widespread civil unrest or civil war in Russia. Because if somethig drastic happens and shit hits the fan big time – we are the first ones who gets the splatters of that shit on to our faces.

Really hope that this will be over soon and more stable and clearheaded government is established. We really don’t need any Putin II or Zhirinovski the Second with fantacies about Great Russia or New USSR.

  20. I wonder, what will various army units do near the front do?

Given how many have been treated as cannon fodder, mutinies might occur. And there is no guarantee of loyalty to Putin even ignoring mutinies, looking at how units have simply surrendered or ignored Wagnerites. If sufficient number of units side with Prigozhin or simply stay neutral, yet not enough to win quickly, this could drag on. And every hour and day spent on infighting only helps Ukraine reclaim their land and liberate their people, logistics has to be nightmare with Rostov being in Wagner hands and the general chaos.

And even if Putin crushes this mutiny/coup decisively, his regime will have lost the illusion of strength and stability. This also takes the wind out of the groups in west advocating for “negotiation” with Putin, as who knows how long he will be in charge even if he wins.
