What are your thoughts on Józef Unrug?

  1. Mixed feelings about how he used the submarines during 1939, but a chad and a backbone of II RP naval fleet.

  2. A traitor. Doesn’t matter that he betrayed the bad guys for the good ones, he is unloyal and should never be praised as a national hero

  3. Good example of a patriotic Pole, a Polonized ethnic German. Also a Lutheran.

  4. Actually apart from saying he’s Polish he had a fleet under his command and that fleet pretty much did nothing and just… Surrendered. I was reading that it’s not 100% as it’s established that he’s a hero. Did pretty much nothing factual to deserve this compared to people that fought and died valiantly. I’m not saying it’s a must for a hero but compared to others he’s pretty much unimportant figure.

  5. Interesting man living in “Interesting” times. Definitely he should be known more in Poland.

If we talk about Polish Navy heroes why not mention Bolesław Romanowski? Very interesting man, top scoring Polish WWII submariner, returned to Poland after war as commander of Błyskawica, served for some time in Polish Navy after but was victim of Stallinist purge ( imprisoned ), after release he lived peacefully and wrote amazing book about his service on submarines Wilk and Dzik, wchich despite some errors is still awsome read and better than many of western submariners books.

  6. Is this the gigachad that demanded to have a French or Polish translator with him at all times during negotiations because he, “forgot,” German (his language of birth) in August 1939?

  7. Knew about him earlier but in general: based and ~~red~~ MARYNARKA WOJENNA pilled, true chad of its era.

  8. Bro went to navy of a country not having sea access at the time

  9. During my conscription, I was asigned to 9th flotilla, which was called forge of admirals (as most polish admirals came out of it) and Joseph Unrug was it’s patron. We had mandatory lesson (don’t remember details, as it was two decades ago), where I first heard about him. It’s a shame that polish schools don’t teach about him (maybe it’s lack of time).

All and all he was polish patriot, proving that you don’t have to even speak the language to be polish.
