Guns N’ Roses are frontrunners for the worst Glasto headliners of all time – review

  1. It was quality. Slash was unreal.
Plus I’ve watched Kanye the self centred cunt do his set.
That will never be beaten as worst headliner.

  2. Axl was struggling to hold a note and could barely be heard. Ruined it for me. I saw them live at another festival last week and had same issue, it’s not just a sound/mix issue, he just hasn’t taken care of himself and can’t keep up anymore.

  3. Watch out Axl!

It’s an overly critical journalist proclaiming you to be the 5th worst thing ever he’s seen this week, armed to the teeth with overly verbose similes!!!!

  4. I’m sure these legendary millionaire rock stars, having performed on the biggest stage in music, will be reading the independent website first thing this morning. For those who don’t condone this kind of baiting don’t click the link, these rags thrive on outrage clicks.

  5. Nothing worse than going to see your favourite band, but then coming away wishing you hadn’t bothered. Sometimes listening to a band when they were in their prime, using great headphones, is a far better deal than see them live.

  6. Something is badly wrong with the sound on the BBC feed. Not sure if its the same in person.

You can barely hear some vocals, unless the singer is screaming into the mic. Foo Fighters were much better but the sound still seemed off.

  7. Independent put up an article yesterday saying how much they hated Arctic Monkeys as well, sound like fucking emotional vampires to be honest. There’s so many stages at Glasto that if you don’t want to watch the main headliner you don’t have to.

  8. I enjoyed it. No one’s expecting them to sound like they did 30 years ago and Axl’s voice struggled at times, but Slash was still great and it was a lot of fun

  9. Yeah, we switched it on for a bit and it was rubbish. You couldn’t hear anything Rose was saying, maybe if you already knew the lyrics you’d be okay but the review is accurate in that he mainly seemed to switch from growling to screaming without much in between.

Turned it over to Fatboy Slim but he didn’t really play any of his hits, it just seemed to be the same track with different samples thrown in.

Tried a third but they seemed to be doing unspeakable things in the ornamental section of a garden centre, so decided to watch bands I like on YouTube instead.

  10. Is there really such a paucity of current music that geriatric has-beens are all that are left to headline the world’s most important music festival?

  11. I loved it. Yeah his voice wasn’t what it was, but the energy was amazing from all the band!

  12. I thought his voice issues were more technical, the sound levels/ mix didn’t seem right. Also noticed when he had a handheld mic , his vocals were clear, then switching to the stand mic, were incomprehensible. might even be as daft as the angle of the mic to his chops.

  13. That’s no surprise, saw a bit of their set 10 years ago at Reading and they were crap then. Didn’t help that they showed up an hour late but they were still so poor.

  14. I’m not a guns n roses fan but I enjoyed their set. Sure the singer hasn’t gone the power in his voice anymore but I still liked the way he sounded (as others have said the mixing was low apparently to cover up his vocal struggles) but yeah overall as a non fan I’d rate their set a 7/10 im sure there have been worse headliners?

  15. I respect the hell out of bands like REM, The Clash and The Smiths who break up and stay broken up despite everything. There’s something inutterably depressing about watching old men leap around while trying to remember their lyrics from forty years ago.

Roger Daltrey belting out ‘hope I die before I get old’ aged fucking SEVENTY-NINE is the worst of all, of course.

  16. It sounds like a case of age catching up with him + not taking care of yourself and still expecting the outcome to be 1980s perfect e.g. see Vince Neil from Motley Crew in 2015 https://youtu.be/gyyDDAiz-a4 – if you genuinely go to one of these events expecting someone to be as they were 30 years ago you need to ask yourself some questions. Even good groups still touring like U2 and Metallica aren’t what they were.

  17. What a sad c*nt Mark Beaumoint is. Anyone with an ounce of sense would know Axls vocals are always a bit rough to say the least. Pretty much always has been.

I thought be band sounded amazing and it was a joy to watch. It was a change from some of the usual guff headliners of recent years.

Don’t be like Mark. Don’t be a twat.

  18. This review is fucking deranged… paragraphs and paragraphs wanking around the point of ‘band from 35 years ago doesn’t sound or hold ideals from present day’ – what an absolute shocker, let me pick my jaw up off the ground….

  19. GnR were brilliant. Its clear the TV feed from the mic wasn’t setup properly because when it was working such as during Down on The Farm, Axl sounded great.

Nobody has ever covered any of their songs better than they did them. That’s just a fact. A huge part of that was Axl’s unique vocals. Returning them for his age isn’t going to work any better than someone else covering them.

  20. I thought it was a great set. These guys are almost 60 it was awesome they are still able to do a 2 hour gig like that. Plus a bonus handstand from Slash at the end 🤘 If they do a tour I’m getting tickets.

The audio mixing for TV was pretty bad but they still rocked.

  21. I enjoyed it and tbh sang along loudly and badly enough that I couldn’t really hear Axl anyway

    Slash is still Slash

Live performances are not meant to be perfect copies of the record anyway

  22. Duff was visibly embarrassed about the vocals. I thought instrument wise they were very good, but Axl’s voice sounded gone. And why can’t he just stand still, he is too old to run round a stage

  23. How was this article written the same day Lana Del Rey didn’t even finish her act as she was late to the stage?

At least G and R fans got to hear their songs. LDR fans didn’t!

  24. The only think I can take from it is that the reviewer was always going to trash it regardless of how the set went, so I’ve actually not got any idea of whether it was good or not.

  25. Regional accent band singing about poverty and council estates is better than old hair-rock band journalism template shocker.

  26. Sad to say but if anyone wants to hear these songs live and not be disappointed, GnR tribute bands sound better than the real thing. The guy in Guns 2 Roses can scream like 1987 Axl did and they look the part.

  27. Using this thread to give a shout out to Måneskin who were really great last night on the Woodsies stage. Very high energy, high tempo, loads of crowd interaction and theatrics. Would love to see them get a spot on the Pyramid stage next year or some time in the future.

  28. The vocal mix was a bit all over the place and Slash’s guitar solo before Sweet Child was a bit shit but there’s no way the write can claim worst headliner ever when Arctic Monkeys butchered their whole set the night before. You can tell from the audience engagement too. The GnR audience reacted and looked like they were having a great time. AM audience looked bored and fed up. Just another sensationalist headline.

  29. It makes me laugh that people slated Artic Monkeys, but are drooling over a set where you could barely hear the singer, wish you couldn’t when you could hear him, and contained about 45 minutes of absolute dross between the few that are worth listening too

  30. I thought it was alright. I was worried about his voice and health since i saw the video of Lisa Marie funeral but Rose and the crowd seemed to be having a blast. Overall Id say the performance overshadowed any vocal issues and I was entertained by the performance.

  31. Mental, they were great what a fucking weird take.

Like any aging rockstar there’s points where Axl’s voice just doesn’t cut through and it wasn’t helping that they were clearly having difficultly with his levels.

It was the Slash show mainly, but the atmosphere was great and everyone I know there are all currently raving on whatsapp about how great it was.
