Think you’re gonna find that very few people agree with you on this. You should absolutely read into that.
A hate speech law which doesn’t define what hate is…how very Irish of us. McEntee is a populist clown in this particular instance
It’s great to see how upset this law is making the nutcases.
We’ve had a pretty much identical law in place for thirty years but this new one is apparently going to destroy free speech.
This is gonna upset the liberals
Maybe we should shut the sun for a while
Maybe we should shut the sub for a bit again.
Hmm, I think a real problem here is that you have to be lawyer to really understand what the bill is saying.
But I have read it, and from my limited understanding, I must say I don’t like it.
I would fully support laws curtailing speech that incites violence. But laws that curtail speech that incites ‘hatred’.
What does that mean? Does hatred have a legal definition somewhere? Because the definition in the bill is circular
”
“hatred” means hatred against a person or a group of persons in the State or elsewhere
on account of their protected characteristics or any one of those characteristics;
”
Hatred means hatred.
Further more, where does the list of protected characteristics come from and especially, why is religion one of them?
Does that mean I can’t critise religion or religious people?
Also, why is their provisions in the bill that concern “condoning, denying or trivialising” genocide, war crimes etc. I mean holocaust deniers are serious scumbag cunts, but I would be uncomfortable making it illegal for them say it. What if a Turkish person comes over here and denies the Armenian genocide, are we going to lock them up for 5 years as per this bill? Because I would be very uncomfortable with that also.
I’ve no idea what the laws were here before this bill, but even if they were similar that doesn’t make this bill any more right.
Shouldn’t it not just be incitement to violence that is prohibited, lose the protected characteristics, or at least the ones that are a choice?
Frightening that something like this could even be considered. The onus is on the accused to prove their innocence btw, anyone who supports this madness needs to go live in North Korea or China.
It’s absolutely hilarious how many on this sub don’t understand how laws and enforcement works. They’d shit themselves if they saw some definitions of terms like assault under the relevant act.
EDIT: Just want to add that whoever sent the Reddit cares message is some next level scum. Get a life and some cop on. That tool is meant to be used to help people not to troll. Pathetic.
This sub is so full of absolute shite.
OP can’t read apparently. Shame…
Ok but there’s one very important question – are you the one who wrote that SuperValu letter from the other day?
Can I get a tldr? Is this a “they’re removing freedom of speech” thing like people are claiming or is this just for actual hate crimes and such?
Lot of people taking extreme positions here. But the current polling is that majority of people dont want it. Alot of people are hearing stories from the UK where people are being investigated and visited by police for tweets and other comments they made (not sure of the content of these tweets or comments) and are worried its going to happen here. The fact it appears to be subjective as opposed to objectice with regards to what the perception of hate is also seems to be a big concern to people.
Can also see politicians using it to ahut down debate and such and people they dont like so for example can a comment about varadkers or mcentees performance as a politician be now percieved and investigated as homophobic or misogynistic.
Dont get the blasphemy comment to try and tie it together though.
Also people forget that laws work both ways so while the dominant politucal ideology and discourse is left to far left now, woukd oeople of that position like to have this law in place if the ideology truly swung the other way and such a law is open for abuse by their opponents.
“Haa hurrr i cant call dem gays and non whites slurs no more” ~~~ OP when he cant say slurs
It is shocking how few civil liberties groups are speaking out. It is simply as they feel the State is on their side
i dont understand why people are so against the hatespeech law. if someones going to go around saying slurs all the time and escalates to “i want to beat/kill these types of people”, some fool is actually going to follow through with that
Every post about this law makes me think that we have more to worry about intelligence in this country then the hate speech law cause there is far to many idiots buying into stupid shit grifters say.

One step forward, and another step forward.
A particularly shite take, that.
Not really.

Not at all the same. Not in the slightest.
