Fewer people are driving their cars into the city, and the council is working on plans to cut numbers further – Dublin Inquirer

  1. The only way I will give up my car and cycle into the city is if they increase garda patrols and deal with the number of bicycle thefts.

  2. If it’s made easier and easier to get in and around Dublin City, I will not drive. Driving in town is horrible and I was already inclined to suffer bad public transport. Good public transport and I will never drive in.

  3. Would like to see Dublin buses equipped with bike racks. I live too far from the city to cycle in, but being able to bring my bike on the bus and cycle through the city would make it worth it.

  4. I’m a cyclist but I still support drivers because as it is the public transport is still awful.

Buses are unreliable, rarely on schedule, some don’t show up at all with no notice and overpriced compared to the rest of Europe.

The 90-minute fare was only a recent addition while this was common in most of Europe for already 50+ years. And for anyone needing multiple buses to get to their destination good luck. Expect a 2h journey.

I’m all for reducing cars in the city but not without a working sustainable well designed working infrastructure for it.

  5. I don’t know why anyone would want to drive into the city, it’s a horrible place to drive and parking is an arm and a leg

  6. P+R near motorway exits with free, reliable, frequent rail transport to the city center. Works everywhere else it’s used.

  7. I drive into town as my passenger is a blue badge holder who can’t use public transport and mostly have to park in paid parking as the blue badge spaces are quickly snapped up and it’s very pricey but to be honest the least amount of cars the better, I don’t mind driving town as awkward as it is so long as it’s inclusive. That’s always my concern when I see these headlines as the council doesn’t have a great track history on being inclusive. It’s already a nightmare for them to move around town

I am a bit torn though as part of the fun of town is dodging cars 😂

  8. I’m curious how is this going to affect gigs in Dublin city because lour bus service back if you’re commuting out of Dublin late at night is not the greatest and also who the fuck can afford 350 a night on a hotel room

I’m all for fewer cars and maybe clean up the place for a change and keep it neat and tidy but something has to give, just making it harder for people to come in and out from other counties doesn’t make any sense to me are they trying to alienate people on the commuter belt or what ?

  9. Public transport both to and within the city is nowhere near extensive enough. Driving in Dublin is already painful and no one does it unless they absolutely have to.

  10. The simplest solution here is to take away parking. I can’t believe that with all the government and council agendas here, I routinely travel down public streets that are carved up for residential parking, all of them with bins and cones out, to the extent that it might as well be private parking.

Bus and bike lanes can’t go through these streets because where would the residents, God bless them, park their cars!?

  11. I can guarantee that if we would have Luas/Metro line or proper reliable bus service outside our estate we wouldn’t even think about owning a car.

  12. > “I’m concerned that the wider council and the councillors themselves are not, you know, seriously considering the economic implications these developments and trends will be having on the city centre as a retail destination,” Gavin said at the meeting.

Yeah, I’m sure the parking chairman is really worried about shops…
