I want to be embarrassed like that as well, really embarrassed.
He was so embarrassed about it, he only spent 14 years as a partner.
Once you have a few million in the bank, it’s suddenly time to be ethical, not while you’re earning it of course.
Unfortunately for the rest of us, the people who can actually enact change to tax reform are the ones benefitting from it…
I really think one of the best policies that we could enact is make everyone’s tax returns totally public. We need radical transparency on what everyone earns, what their sources of income are and how much tax they pay.
It will reduce embarrassment about earnings and help young people really understand what jobs pay well and how much of a difference it can make.
He won’t say how much he earned which is silly because this isn’t a secret. PPP at Clifford chance is £2m, head of tax is going to get £3-£4m. I accept it’s a broad range but not revealing an exact figure is going to change how people think of him.
Why didn’t he send HMRC a cheque? There’s nothing to stop anyone paying more tax if they want to.
