
On this day 100 years ago GOELRO plan was accepted by Sovnarkom of the USSR. According to this plan, 20 thermal power stations and 10 hydroelectric power stations were to be built in the USSR in 15 years, including the largest one in Europe, Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, built in Ukraine in 1932.

I love old maps
During building the reservoirs on the Dnieper there were massive disgregard for displacement and cultural loss. A lot of (sometimes very old) villages are now under water, people were forcibly displaced en masse, the river changed forever. While having hydropower now is a good thing, the cost was enormous and imposed on Ukraine without consideration and options – lets remember that too
Everyday is a soviet union remembrance day… can’t we just let it go for 364 days a year?
