Wow what a bold statement. A couple of crazy people walked around the city colouring traffic signs.
Ha. Nice
I agree with that to be honest. I never liked using traffic infrastructure for politics and making statements. While this is still somewhat tolerable as it increases visibility for the zebra crossing, it’s just not the kind of precedent I want. There are plenty of artwork things you can place on the side of the roads but don’t mess with infrastructure itself.
The absolute worst are the ones where people put stickers on top of the actual traffic lights for some social or political cause. Fuck off with that.
Mooie protestactie van de Aalstenaars!
Don’t forget that N-VA Aalst is like VB light, with Karim van Overmeire – as author of the infamous ’70 puntenplan’ from the racist political party – as sitting elderman in the city council.
VB also supported the vote against the rainbow crossing with N-VA and Open VLD.
Also: in 2019 Steve Herman (VB Aalst) posted on facebook he was disgusted by the Gay pride.
Also: when in Beveren a gay man died because of homobashing, a lot of cities hung the rainbow flag in support of gay right. Guess which city didn’t?
Why we keep focusing on symbolic issues. I as a gay man don’t care if there’s a rainbow zebra cross in Aalst, all I know is that I and my husband can walk there safely (and we’ve been there and we love it). Even if rainbow zebra cross is everywhere in Brussels, we never feel welcome there and don’t feel safe there at all because we can be attacked the moment we show affection (a gay friend of mine was attacked there, and we also had our own harmless incident but it was still annoying and made us feel unsafe).
Belachelijk, een zebrapad moet neutraal zijn en geen afleidbaar ding vindt het een zeer goede beslissing van stad Aalst
Imagine upset raken omdat je geen regenboog zebrepad krijgt.
Hey Aalst here is a free thing that we will maintain for you, also for free. But it will also symbolize you support the lgbt community. All the other cities are doing it.
Aalst: “Oh no thanks. We don’t want.. I mean we already do this other thing once a year… Heum, it’ll be so unsafe!”
All other cities: “It is getting harder to cover up all those bodies from traffic deaths but free is free.” *gay laugh*
I understand it’s a sign of support for the LGBT+ community, but what does it achieve ? Really what’s the point ?
You can’t legislate acceptance.
I always feel that on those topics it’s a very cheap political move to display yourself as progressive. Everytime the govenment has legalized things that should never have been illegal, people say good job. But that costs absolutely nothing.
How will a pedestrian crossing help in any way the LGBT community ?
If useless symbolic gestures were a stock we’d all be billionaires.
Infrastructure isn’t to be tampered with fun designs because it would make it less clear. Signs are neutral and clear because they are meant to inform.
If you want to truly support the LGBTQ+ community, you can donate to the local organization or hang a LGBTQ+ flag(s) at your home as example.
Ware het niet dat een regenboogzebrapad nog steeds een rechtsgeldig zebrapad is. Maar een verkeersbord dat ingekleurd is niet meer…
