Malta signs preliminary agreement with Libya for electricity interconnector

  1. Is it just my ignorance or did this news fly under the radar? No one I’ve spoken to about it even heard this.

    This interconnector would mean we would have a total of 3 – including the planned second one with Sicily. I understand Malta’s energy needs are ever-increasing, but this will greatly reduce our energy independence. That is worrying. Especially following the chaos the world experienced after Russia invaded Ukraine, is it *really* a good idea to depend on other countries even more to switch on our lights?

    That’s besides the fact that while there have been advances in the Libyan peace process, the civil war is not yet over. [There were clashes in a city just last month](https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/libyan-forces-deploy-western-city-deadly-fighting.1031606) and Libya hasn’t had an election in years as they keep being repeatedly postponed. God forbid Gaddafi’s son ever comes to power.
