  1. French police unions published a very strong letter attacking the protesters pretty harshly. Macron walks a thin line here.

  2. >It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

  3. Look. This problem is not easy to solve. France should IMO radically overhaul immigration to ensure that only highly educated people with shared values immigrate there. Also family reunification needs to be moved to Danish style means testing and opportunity assesment. This won’t solve issues but it will prevent 2045 riots being even bigger.

Second, it needs to use both carrots and sticks. It should for example continue investments started after 2005 and try to do more to reduce discrimination in the workplace (e.g. use anonymized CVs?). Also overhaul police rules of engagement for minor incidents, to reduce the risk od abuse. That said, sticks are needed too. Rioters should be heavily punished, torching and vandalism should land severe prison (edit: or even better, community service) sentences.

  4. Could it be that neoliberal policies, by disproportionately increasing the gap between the rich and the poor and gutting social services, have contributed to growing social anger not only in France but also in the rest of the Western world, leading to the riots of recent years?

Nah. Must be the fault of those damn immigrants and those damn protesters who dare to protest for their rights, I’m sure.

  5. ~~And once again Macron runs abroad when hell breaks loose in his country.~~

    Edit: apparently I’m blind

Sub was still closed but he literally blamed video games for what’s happening.

    🤡

  6. King Charles had to cancel a visit to France a few months back for similar but completely unrelated reasons. Destructive protests/riots damage a countries ability to function normally, and the more regular they are, the more it affects the country as a whole. Frankly, I see no reason why we would expect these events to become less regular instead of more.

  7. “Yes yes, good Macron, gimme 5 more minutes and the guillotine will be ready”

  8. Macron himself is guilty of fanning the flames with his inciteful comments on the incident and the police. He has no credibility here.

  9. The left is disgusting . People from the US think this is a worker’s protest lmao . This is the type of propaganda they defecate on all of us everyday . The right is a bunch of pathetic loser cowards who use the common man to achive wealth and power .

  10. People are talking about the rioters, but no one is talking about how ineffective and mild French government is, Macron is probably the worst president France has ever had in postmodern times, doing absolutely nothing, he doesn’t even care.

  12. The kid didnt have any criminal record and when you watch the video the police man was nowhere near to any sort of danger stop this reddit nonsense ffs. He shot the kid with absolute no reason. The kid didnt have a gun or any weapons of any kind

  13. France looks like a lost cause right now. Bad integration will do this to you I guess. Can riotors with dual citizenship be deported? (probably not)

  14. Police and emergency services should completely stand down and let the riots play out.
It seems to be what many posters want

  15. Somehow r/europe is even worse after the “protest”. Should have stayed closed.
