Supermarket fuel prices up due to lack of competition

  1. “Last year”.

Wait, when did the petrol station boys do that leveraged buyout of ASDA again?

  2. And this is at a time when Asda are buying their Parent Company EG Group, will be interesting if CMA will allow that now.

  3. The number of petrol stations falls every year, this is inevitable.

  4. All of these entities recording record profits while average people struggle with basic necessities. What’s even the point of having a government if they do nothing to curtail this

  5. So because lack of competition and not because increased cost on fuel they kept their prices high? Shocked.

We probably went almost a full year where our towns local supermarket petrol station was more expensive than the ones outside on highways which never made any sense. But with only two stations now it makes sense… There was no competition for them to reduce their prices…

The price gouging supermarkets have been doing is shameless with the current trend of points card wars being the latest

  6. Let’s not forget Sunaks 5p cut in fuel duty which is essentially 5p more to the corporations. Man’s a puppet.

  7. Blatant gouging. We are constantly being tested to what our limit will be.

  8. During the “fuel shortage” the government removed the rules that stopped petrol retailers effectively collaborating on costs, distribution, etc. in the name of helping them get fuel out to consumers.

To my knowledge, those rules never got reinstated, and ever since there’s been one event after another after another that has prevented any meaningful drop in prices.

Was it done and just not mentioned? Or have the rules stayed in their relaxed state since, allowing all the retailers to discuss supply and costs freely?

  9. So the big 4 simultaneously decided to increase their profit margins by the same amount at the same time.

    Totally by coincidence.

Nice to see our anti price-fixing and anti monopoly laws doing their jobs.

  10. The only thing you can realistically do about this is to drive as economically as possible. If everyone did that it would make a big difference.

  11. Hahaha, just unbelievable. Fucked by everyone, everything all at once.

  12. What could possibly go wrong when you remove competition? The whole system is corrupt.

  13. Supermarket petrol (especially Tesco) seems to be more expensive than the main garages these days. I guess they are adding a convenience fee and taking advantage of people who have got used to supermarket petrol being cheaper in the past.

  14. Energy companies, supermarkets all gauging prices because of lack of competition. The free market will regulate itself. Yeah sure….

  15. I don’t really understand. I still find supermarket fuel to be much cheaper than the other petrol stations.

  16. We have a BP garage near us who consistently cheaper than the supermarkets. I’m always surprised.

There’s an app to check your local fuel prices which I recommend. Huge differences.
