Moikka! I am an upcoming student near in Helsinki and i am opting for a shared duo apartment in HOAS and am hoping to recieve inputs in my few questions if possible.

1st I would just like to ask the meaning of the acronym in HOAS listings like “MON”? (as shown in the pic). I understand most acronyms so far but “MON” is what i get sry. It may be trivial question but helpful answers rly means alot to me as its just my first time to rent an apartment ever even migrating abroad aswell.

Lastly, accding. to the acronyms in the pic, there are also “1H” instead of “2H” which is unusual for a shared duo apartment unless both students will share the room together. Therefore, would i be sharing a room with a student if accepted a Shared Duo apartment with “1H+OH+kT” or “1H+TPK” description?

Even before, I tried using google and trying to comment at the posts and comment threads here in this sub regarding student questions but i couldnt seem to find it now.

Im kindly hoping for your responses on this matter thank you and have a good day.

  1. Good question, I’ve never seen this. Could you link the page?

  2. I have no idea about the abbreviation sadly, but given how apartments are usually described, it probably describes the kitchen somehow. It’s two rooms, so probably it at least isn’t a communal one.

From what I remember of HOAS, tpk is never shared. It’s a kitchen essentially linked to the living area in most cases and as such not shared.

I would really honestly suggest you call them. It’s been quite a few years for me, but their phone line was insanely helpful. Give it a go, you don’t want to play a guessing game with your flat.

And I wish you a great stay in Helsinki.

  3. This one triggered my google fingers and the best Google offers me is the the police dictionary.

According to that mon. (not MON) is used for housing as in monikko that means “**plural**” from the Swedish translation I easily can twist it to “**many apartments**”. This is my best and only guess.

    Sauce is this PDF [https://www.theseus.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/87210/Oppikirjoja8_Vesisenaho_web.pdf](https://www.theseus.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/87210/Oppikirjoja8_Vesisenaho_web.pdf)

  4. My best guess is it might for “monitoimitila”, or a “multi-function space”, so perhaps a bigger living room with a kitchen. Though that kind of thing called by that name is usually something you find in office buildings or a coworking space. But this is purely a guess. I can’t find a source anywhere that would tell what “mon” stands for.
