  1. Contact their health insurance provider instead of having their friend post a vague, totally uninformative post on reddit. What is the “German Nation Health Fund” anyway?

  2. Assuming this is the same problem we get here every few weeks:

Your friend did not inform their insurance (there is no “German National Health Fund”) about their employment status and income situation after that situation changed (for instance because they left a job).

Their insurance company no longer received contributions made on your friend behalf by their employer.

The insurance then sent multiple letters asking about that status, which your friend did not receive/open/read, possibly because they were in German.

Finally, when the insurance company gave up on getting that information, they told your friend that if they did not communicate, they were legally required to charge your friend the maximum contribution, both employer and employee parts, which works out to ~900 Euro per month. It’s no “penalty”, but the maximum possible charge that, again, they are required to charge if they do not have information.

It’s not allowed to be uninsured in Germany. Insurances cannot just stop insuring people.

What your friend can do is contact their insurer and clarify what the situation actually was.
