  1. I don’t know what to think about this issue, escooters are a fantastic mode of transport, they fit in the middle of walking and cycling. But do understand that a minority of people will cause issues (just like cyclists and car drivers)

  2. I’ve been waiting for this E-scooters are this really weird middle ground
There are cops that i know that own e-scooters for day to day commute
Shops sell them with warnings saying that they are illegal to operate
There is nothing else i can think of that is like this you can’t buy a gun from tescos with a sign saying “Hey cool gun but don’t use it on the street ok It’s just for use on private land for shooting clay pigeons”

It’s a 15mph vehicle what private land do most people own that allows for the use of a 15mph vehicle.

I’ve been operating under the mindset that they have been sold purposefully and the police have been doing nothing about them only for the police to suddenly swoop in and take waves of them off the streets and brand you all criminal scum and fine everyone and claim themselves as heroes….it only takes one incident

  3. Or…. You could just regulate them properly?

Why do the solutions in this country always default to the most absolute and heavyhanded?

  4. There has been a huge amount of dithering about the legality of e-scooters. They aren’t in themselves illegal and you can own one and ride it on private land to your hearts content. however they are illegal on public land unless they are rented.

Its not hard to see why people are confused by it when you see rented ones in city centres all the time.

You can buy ones on the internet that will do over 60mph which is crazy.

What needs to happen is regulation. They should be speed limited (15mph is a good max), need to have restrictions on where they are ridden in the same way bikes are, as they are powered they should probably be insured, they should be registered, meet minimum standards so you cant just order some ludicrous machine from the internet and there should be a minimum age requirement to ride them too.

I think they are a great form of cheap transport. But there are enough idiots on them who don’t give a shit that are giving people a justifiable reason to hate them.

  5. E-scooters are dangerous and cause lots of nasty a&e injuries. You won’t be able to solve it until they are treated as a vehicle and dont share space with pedestrians.

  6. The Freemen of England should get busy e-scooting and citing their right to travel, that’ll make for some funny videos if nothing else!

  7. I take issue with the ones that look like mopeds and the idiots that ride them around at night with the lights off. It is a people problem more than a product issue for sure.

  8. Just from a practical perspective, how? These scooters are fast, if someone wants to they can just refuse to stop for the police and I highly doubt they’ll be chasing people.

  9. Can we seize and crush any cars parked on pavement or double-yellows?

  10. Regularly see people speeding down the pavements here on e-scooters and I’m in two minds about them – yes, they can be dangerous if driven irresponsibly but then we also have a ridiculous number of people on mobility scooters here too – some of them being those three-wheeled ones with mirrors that look like motor-trikes. They’re driven with as little care and attention though. I’ve been knocked into the road on one occasion to avoid being hit by one.

  11. They need some kind of regulation. People getting kits online and turning their scooters into death machines going up to 50mph. I’ve personally seen a big rise in e scooter related fatal and disabling injuries. Its moronic.

  12. I think the saga of e-scooters and e-bikes is a microcosmic example of the sickness of this country. We want to ease traffic. We want to reduce reliance on fossil-fuels. We want short-range personal transport at low cost. We want cleaner air.

Along comes a range of cost-effective products which can meet these needs for us. Can we as a country get it together to make safe and sensible use of them?

    Well can we?

  13. Except for the ones that their chums at the council and their buddies rent out

  14. E scooters should have some form of tax on them. As should e bikes. They have a motor, and should be taxed and insured

It’s as simple as this. If you buy an e-bike/scooter you have to pay a tax either added on the retail price or in some other way and you must take out insurance first in order to buy one. They can cause real damage, not only due to their speed but their components. The batteries are potentially explosive and highly dangerous.

  15. I have a problem with any idiot riding on a footpath. Especially when they think you should squeeze up to the side or walk on the road with your dog and toddler.

  16. Crush them? Someone has clearly never seen a lithium fire

  17. Top tip: Paint your privately owned E-scooter the same colour as your local rental scheme provider (orange or green, other brands available…) and continue on unhampered.

  18. Can we just seize and crush the assholes that ruin it for everyone else? They don’t have this problem in major cities in the US.

  19. >‘Seize and crush’

Seize and cause fires that you can’t put out. You don’t want to crush LiPo batteries.

  20. Yeah fair enough, they’re clearly illegal. No one said they were legal to buy and use on the road. Not safe to go on the road , not safe on the pavement
