I was looking at which car was stolen the most in Italy: Fiat:
1. Fiat Panda
2. Fiat 500
3. Fiat Punto
I am guessing these are stolen to be sold piece by piece
And all the insurance companies have the numbers of the thieves. Lot’s of times, they’ll pay a ransom for the stolen car and return it to the owner. Cheaper than paying for a new/replacement car.
To be honest, I’ve never ever heard of a car being stolen ever in my life. Neither when I was a kid, nor now. So I’m not surprised at all that romania is among the safest.

Spent 10 days there, rent a car, got all 4 tires stolen right outside the apartment in Rome. 1200 euros charged, could’ve been the car rental ppl themselves to scam me, who knows.
I guess all the thefts from Romania are now in other European countries.

There was a joke a few years ago in Italy that went like this: “look, I’ve just seen the new ad campaign from the Romanian government. It was brilliant! They said, come to Romania for your holidays, your car is already here!”
While it wasn’t true, it speaks of what the perception was in Italy about who the perpetrators of car theft were.
Disclaimer: I personally think most thefts are from Italians.

travelled to Italy last year, it is crazy convenient how you dont need to rent a car when you travel. Just find the car closest to you and drive it away.
