Hey r/Norway
My friend and I are planning a road trip in Norway. We’re considering renting an electric vehicle.
Is this feasible to do? Or should we stick with a traditional fuel car?
Will hotels allow us to use their power socket to recharge our EV overnight? We are of course willing to pay for charging, which we expect would be cheaper than a traditional petrol car.
Notes:
* Neither of us have driven an EV before.
* The cheapest option I’m looking at right now to rent [VW ID3 ELECTRIC] has a [“real range” of 275 km](https://ev-database.org/car/1127/Volkswagen-ID3-Pure-Performance), which is shorter than what we plan to drive in a single day, and it takes [at least 30 min to charge](https://www.myenergi.com/ie/guides/how-to-charge-the-volkswagen-id-3/#:~:text=How%20long%20does,and%2060%20minutes.). So we’ll probably have to pick a different car, right?

Just get the right apps and you will be fine.
Recharge, Mer, Kople, Eviny and Circle K.
It’s illegal to use the power socket to charge, but some places might let you do it. Loads of hotels do have chargers though.
Especially from Kople, Mer and Recharge.
To plan ahead, use the map http://chargefinder.com
1. its feasible
2. check with you accomadation about charging there. Many hotels do have parking and charges. Not booked hotel you say? You should. Hotels in Norway during summer is often full. You are taking a risk if not.
3. plan a route
4. use the elton app to locate charges (and maybe pay depending on the car) and talk to the renter about what charging app fits to the car.
5. Have you driven an automatic before? If so its pretty much the same. Only thing is that EV cars «brake» more when you let the accelerator go to charge the batteries. So in stead of rolling, it slighlty brakes. Some cars have like an e-padel thing that you use for both braking and accelerating. Stay clear of these ones. I think its just the newer Nissan that have these but not sure. Ask the renter.
There are charging stations available all across Norway afaik. Just plan in advance. You can find several maps of charging stations online, and they have superchargers. Some hotels have charging included and some you may have to pay extra.
I got this from my parents who have planned to drive Oslo-Senja. They don’t expect to pay that much less than for gas though because the superchargers can be pricey.
