  1. >Spain’s leftwing labour minister, Yolanda Díaz, has proposed a scheme to tackle social inequality by giving every young person in the country €20,000 (£17,000) to be spent on study, training or setting up a business once they reach the age of 18.

  2. Love this idea. Only adaptation I’d make is fund it directly from inheritance taxes, not earnings.

Having said that, the fact that her family background held her back from pursuing her dream to become *an employment inspector*…

  3. This is an good idea if it can be implemented correctly.

  4. This is a terrible idea, throwing money at the citizen is unacceptable and a vile act of populism, we should rather, as we have done many times, inject millions into our corporations in search of growth and market stability.

Seriously speaking, beyond ironic comments, it would be good if you presented a plan on where you are going to get the necessary funds to analyze the matter, besides that you have the right, everyone, regardless of their level of wealth, is something at least, strange.

  5. Wasn’t Spain one of the recipients of the covid funds along with Italy?

I remember Spain being in real need of money and had a showdown with the frugal four.

  6. It’s a good idea in theory but in theory capitalism and communism both work, so probably it’s gonna implode

  7. Well cant be worst that giving billions to billionaires in tax rebate and subsidiaries.

  8. If this would be like the student grant system in nordic countries, then it’s not a bad idea. Monthly allowance to students who get their courses done so they don’t have to work so much during their education just to afford living. Even better is the proposal to make the rich pay for it.

  9. Ireland gives approx 200 euro per month for every child in the state from when they are born until age 18. This goes only to the mother unless she is not alive.

This means the child/mother gets approx 40,000 euro per child. Currently there’s no limit to the amount of children.

Ireland terrible other problems like cost of childcare but birth rates are pretty ok and would improve if we fix cost of living

Edit – it’s 140 euros – so that is 30,240 euro per child

It has increased many times in the past and likely will increase in future

  10. Germany suggested the very same thing two years ago. Think they gave up on it by now.

  11. Spain will also have its hand out to the EU asking for more money, while wasting billions on populist bullshit to get votes.

Much easier to just throw money everywhere, rather than address the actual issues (especially when its someone else’s money)

  12. I need more than 3 years of working to get 20k€… I just don’t get it. They should improve the working condition first instead of this useless bs.

  13. Buying votes time!

It’s not doable, and it will be wasted in most of the cases.

  14. It is a much better idea to eliminate the tax on large fortunes, as the far-right presidential candidate proposes. And the worst thing is that the audience of the TV program where he said it, applauded him. Can people be more imbecilic?

  15. Social programs that basically say “here is a bunch of money” have been a failure. What works are three things:

    1. Tax breaks. Tax breaks for people below a certain income should be implemented worldwide.

    2. Highly conditional financial support. We will give you money but only if you follow these specific circumstances. The moment you stop the tap runs dry.

    3. Support with resources other than money. For example if you want to boost painters, the government buys them the painting supplies instead of giving them money to do so themselves. The reason is because most would spend the money on drugs and alcohol and if you don’t believe me I’ve grown up around artists.

More people should study economics. That’s a good way to get people to stop supporting stupid policies.

  16. Remember that time in the last 40 odd years in the UK when it wasn’t the tories in power and Labour implemented the Child Trust Funds that were about as basic as can be, but was investing in the kids?

    That was nice.

  17. It sounds nuts but it’s actually not a bad idea could allow a lot of young people to buy a car or have a deposit for a flat or go traveling. Or set up a small businesss if they feel adventurous. Could also teach people to be responsible with money if they blow it. I’d rather give it to younger people who might do something with it than constantly subsidize the older generation

  18. This is stupid, just max inheritance tax and use the money to provide free education and social services for those that need them
