Speaking skills key to break class barriers, says Keir Starmer

  1. I mean he’s right that speaking like a braindead roadman won’t help you in life but I’d say it’s poverty that’s really holding kids back.

  2. So rather than teach people not to judge others based on accent, just wipe all accents out and get all the kids to masquerade as middle class southerners.

  3. Oratory skills that probably come from years of practicing music, drama productions, learning foreign languages, debate clubs, etc.

All the things that have been stripped from state schools in favour of more and more academic assessments in STEM subjects.

And guess what, music, languages and drama in non state schools is better funded today than it ever has been.

  4. Shut up Keir ,u fat ballerina.please give us some traditional labour policies to get behind, u won’t will you though cos you are Tory mk2

  5. “If you don’t sound poor, maybe people won’t treat you like the pleb you are” said the knight of the realm.

  6. “U wot mate”

The real problem is the poverty cycle because most trapped kids aren’t going to be going to a good school. If they’re lucky they go to a half decent one, in which case they stand a chance of breaking out (I remember one kid off a local estate who managed to get a scholarship to study in the US because his school was half decent). More likely they’ll be on a typical ‘estate school’ that it towards the bottom of the league tables.

  7. As well as improving access to the arts for poorer kids, they need to understand the value of being able to change their tone to meet their audience. Nothing wrong with slang and regional dialects but being able to adopt a work voice is a necessary evil still. Kids who cannot put a work voice on are going to be at a huge disadvantage compared to private school kids.

  8. This is all the same “lets fix inequality with education” thing that New Labour tried. It works up to a point, and then you find that you just have more graduates but no more good jobs so now everything requires a degree (and the concomitant debt) even when you don’t really need a university education to do the job.

They need a plan to make sure the good jobs are there for people after they get educated.

  9. Read that as “Speaking Shill”, and I suppose he is.
