I see the point, but churches are struggling to make ends meet and have expenses to cover. Nobody makes people get married in church, if you want to then it seems fair that you pay something towards the cost.
I wouldn’t think this if there was no alternative, but there are so many other options now, and everyone expects to pay for them, why should the church be the only one that’s free?
I would have thought that if you were a hard-up genuine churchgoer who was known to the vicar, there’d be ways in which the fee could be subsidised or even completely paid for by parish funds.
If you’re just doing it for the photos before jetting off to a luxury hotel in the Caribbean, and won’t set foot in the church again until you want a baby christened, then you can get stuffed.
It’s either about religion or about money it can’t be both. Even Jesus cast the money lenders out of the temple.
My Church is an old, tiny, listed building that costs about £15k a year in upkeep alone.
There’s like 5-10 weddings a year.
No issues with the cost, if you go there and actually can’t afford it there’s ways around it.
Would the CoE just do the decent thing and scrap itself?
