Brăila bridge over the Danube: Romania inaugurates one of Europe’s largest bridges

  1. Story time: Back in the late 1930s, my grandfather (who was still a child) was sent by his parents to the Brăila side of the Danube at a farmer to become an apprentice and learn how to cultivate vegetables.

    However, he was beaten badly by the farmer and he ran away, barefoot through the frosty (it was November) open fields. He reached the place where this bridge is now, but back then there was a ferry. He had no money, but a lady saw him shivering and paid for his passage to get back home.

    Eventually, he was sent to Bucharest, to become an apprentice to a tailor, who also beat him, because that was back then the way you teach a young man something. When the communists came to power, the tailor was arrested for beating his employees.
