Silvio Berlusconi left €30 million to an old friend who was convicted of being involved with the mafia and €100 million to his girlfriend.

The contents of the former prime minister’s will emerged on Thursday, with one of the main beneficiaries being Marcello Dell’ Utri, a former senator in Mr Berlusconi’s centre-Right Forza Italia party.

He was accused of being the key link between the three-time prime minister and the Cosa Nostra mafia of Sicily.

Mr Dell’ Utri, 81, ran an advertising agency for Mr Berlusconi and was a founding member of Forza Italia.

Facing charges of mafia association, he fled Italy in 2014 but was arrested in Beirut on an Interpol warrant. He served four years in prison and another year under house arrest after being convicted of the charge of mafia association, forging links in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s between Cosa Nostra bosses in his native Sicily and businesses owned by Mr Berlusconi.

    He always denied the charges.

Mr Dell’Utri said he was profoundly grateful to the former prime minister, who died last month at the age of 86 from leukaemia and was given a state funeral in Milan’s historic cathedral.

“I have done nothing but cry since this morning: not so much because of the material gesture but because it shows the greatness of the man,” the former senator said.

“I didn’t expect it because he didn’t owe me anything. I gave everything for him and he gave everything for me.

”He said Mr Berlusconi, a billionaire businessman who entered politics in the 1990s, was “like a brother to me”.
